Exploring what is (possibly) the largest retro-focused game convention in the country! MGC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is full of pinball and arcade machines, video games both old and new, vintage computers, tabletop gaming, LAN parties, cosplay, music, and so much more. Let's evaluate how things went in 2026! I always wondered with these retro gaming conventions why they never try and get the actual programmers or the artists that did the cover art for the popular retro games. Those are the real rock stars of the video game world, and they don't get the recognition even though they're the people who created the actual games that thousands of people go to these conventions to buy those games. I imagine that some of these artists and programmers aren't available, but I would also guess that some are able to make it to a convention still and haven't been contacted for whatever reason. I mean, how cool would it be to get something like the cover art of the original Mega Man for the NES signed, or meet the producer of Super Metroid, or the creator of Splatterhouse That would be amazing! It's always the same guests at every convention every year, and hopefully someday the organizers of these retro conventions can put something like that together.

Honestly, going since around 2009 and having friends involved as well, volunteering since 2014, and now showing off my own systems and games for a few years, the chaos has been A Thing the whole time. Moving to a bigger area just made it more chaotic. And if you understand that a lot of the guys bringing stuff just showed up to basically hang out, be around for the after party, and just chill, it makes a little more sense. I doubt they'll change it much, but I do agree that the online map doesn't help much. That does need some upgrading for next year.

15: 26 Hello, Clark here, I'm one of the Atari guys in this room who owns the displays (we often run into each other, usually at VCFMW. I agree it was way too empty in that room. Very confusing why there was no one else in there as it was in a nice spot. I was only told after you left that you had your own table set up for seemingly half a day since it was in front of the DJ nearby, however with the emptiness of our room it was pretty quiet, and I would have been happy to invite you to move your table in with us had you stayed around, haha.

The scattered nature of the homebrew folks is something of a remnant of when this show, rather recently, was still held in a hotel and many if not most of the various guests were just hobbyists opening their rooms for people to come in and interact with the things they'd built. Chalk it up to growing pains, and absolutely something they need to work on.
I kind of miss the older iterations of this convention, but it's also wonderful that it's blossomed into the spectacle that it has.

Honestly, this almost strikes me as it got big enough they don't know how to properly run things now. Why aren't things grouped in a logical order, what is going on with all the random stuff not remotely related to games Not listing the location of invited guests is a big issue; you have an assigned spot for them, how hard is it to have that info handy I get organizing an event like this is a LOT of work but there are basic items (like you pointed out) that should have been a priority.
reply

man that event looks psychotic. i had to tap out of my local more focused retro gaming convention because it just got too big for me. I can only imagine trying to attend something like this thats so broad stroke to feature bmx, wrestling, a trillion arcade games, free to play console setups and a gajillion vendors. especially without any sort of coherent layout. besides the content and having a table to represent yourself I can't imagine attending for any other reason

Did I see you with Uncle Derek from Stop Skeletons From Fighting during that Faceball 2000 mention So, if you don't know, Faceball 2000 was a Game Boy game that was alleged to have 16 person multiplayer games. A man named Derek sought to see if he could actually get a 16 player game running. It took something like two years. If you want the whole story (it's a long one) check out the video My 2 Year Journey to Solve the 30-Year Myth of Faceball 2000.

With AI theft programs ruining the gaming industry both in hardware (P(o)S removing disk from their system to both focus on AI data centers and to make owning games impossible) and in software (CEOs who think Xbox should garner billions of people a day showing they have room temperature IQ. in the arctic. And the room is a shack with no door, this is basically the place to be. Old games is where its at. It's a shame the organizing leaves to be desired.

I knew you were a guest, but didn't know you had a table until the vlog came out- we'd have absolutely found room for you upstairs. Apologies that they did ya like that, and apologies we didn't figure it out in time to do something about it before or during the show. For what it's worth we've submitted this video (and your previous vlog) directly to the organizing committee- here's hoping they make some big changes in 2027.

It was nice meeting you, Clint! I remember checking the guest list a few weeks prior to the event and didn't see anybody I recognized, so it was a nice surprise to run into you while walking past the rave area. I know you'd prefer a better area, but it was nice getting to talk without feeling the pressure of a dozen other folks standing behind me. Hopefully the con will see some better organization next year!

I remember when MGC was just hosted in a hotel. Also I remember I bought a shirt and never got it because they apparently over-sold my size. I asked if I could get another size they had in stock and the answer was No, those are already sold like the shirt I bought already wasn't already sold and given to someone else. interesting to see it's not changed too much in disorganization despite the much larger venue lol

i think the event has grown too large for even a building like that. needs to have a dedicated place made just for this stuff i think. something like you said, more organized with spaces divided correctly for loud vs quiet parts. looked like a nightmare for someone with auditory processing issues such as myself with autism that i could mask for maybe 2 days worth and then need a week to recover from it.

Im sorry for what they did to you LGR! Put your table in front of that nightclub in the middle of a nowhere hallway, dammit if it was me i would have dragged that table anywhere else myself. I could never stand to stay close to that nonsense noise for 5 min. They need to get their shit sorted out, this is not acceptable. It's not acceptable for anyone let alone a guest of your size, that was crazy!

This year was my second year attending and I had a blast, but I didn't realize you were there! It really is a challenge to try to make it to the panels and events you want, and make sure you are in the right place at the right time. It can take a while to get from one end to the other! I do remember that rave room having a musty smell for some reason too.
reply

Maybe their line of thinking is that you go to the event, work your way around each area, you can skip who you don't want to see as you approach them, but I understand that some people maybe there to specifically see certain people.
But they got no class treating you like a jabroni.

Been a fan of you for years, really glad I finally got to meet you at MGC a few years back! Sad I couldn't make it this year, I've been attending MGC every year since 2011. Thank you for signing my original copy of Duke Nukem 3D that was also signed by John St John!

NGL next year they should pay you to use this video as a What to Expect minus the shitty booth in a hallway
Its funny I watched the whole Vlog, but I was just like ehh but then you started selling it like a travel package here, and now I wanna go to it.

9: 39 lmao if I was there, I’d buy that rule 63 Jar Jar in Leia’s gold bikini on the spot. I’m not even a Star Wars fan, but I watched the phantom menace over and over as a kid, I even had the novelization (where they spelled R2-D2 as Artoo Deetoo.

I cry at the fact I live 40 min from this and never have gone. Just never lines up and people in my life have a way of keeping me from doing what I really enjoy. . Mostly because I just can't find a good CRT and this looks like the place to find one.
reply

It looks like a pretty fun place to attend, but the lack of organization is killing it for me. It doesn’t need to be super organized, but somehow the midsized anime expo I went to years ago had this down. It feels inexcusable nowadays.
