I've gotten pretty far into this. Right now I'm on the third episode after beating the first two.
Here are some tips for anyone who is having trouble:
Be conservative. The rule of thumb is to not use the spears unless you absolutely must. Jump over every monster if you can. You don't come across extra spears too often and you don't want to run out because sometimes you do need them.
If it doesn't look like you need the magic paper to complete a level, don't grab it, because it's probably a trap and then you'll have to restart. The game also likes to put items in areas that will kill you when you try to get them. Use common sense, but sometimes a bit of trial and error is required.
Once you get used to the play mechanics and the tricks that the game throws at you, it's not too tough. At least it doesn't become overly frustrating. It's actually a lot of fun. The collision detection _is_ unforgiving but that's part of the challenge.
I love the clean, simple old school aesthetics in this game. The graphic style still has a lot of charm.

I am apparently way late to this party, but I'll comment anyway. I had this game and got it in about the 5th grade, so around 92-93. 3D Realms lets you get all 4 episodes now with an account, so as an adult, I got to play all 4 episodes since I could not afford all the games with my paper route money back then. Actually, everyone in my house, parents included tried for the absolute highest score. It was competitive. It was the only game the entire family played. The biggest complaint, as you suggest, is the graphics being the way they are with the black border around the character creating the appearance that you not touching anything, but being killed. If I'm being honest, I enjoyed every second of it just as much as I did as a kid. It was infuriating to grab the wrong scroll and lock myself in. You would have to be something wrong with you to play with without copious amounts of the save/restore feature. I think the only way to explain this game is to do it as emotionally as you did. Its an experience to play it.

Holy CRT-s! This review didn-t age too well, did it? The odds are slim, but i would love it if this got a updated review, i grew up with this game, and while I wouldn-t say your opinions are unfounded or -shut your goddamn mouth, this game is beautiful and you should feel bad! - or anything like that, it would be nice to give the game a look in a more structured form. The tone of the video was unclear (maybe bipolar) and the analog earrapey yell wasn-t exactly pleasant to my ears; in fact, it-s pretty harsh on headphones.

My story dear LGR is more embarassing: when i got my first PC with VGA, it was my first game i had on disk, and spent too much time playing it and i was way older than you, ( 15 yo. Yes i had VGA, and i was playing this CGA shareware game.
Attempting to construct the aftermath, i believe that it was addicting because it had the Flappy Bird effect. You could loose in situations that you did not expect, so this made you try harder.

Taken from the readme file of the freeware release.
-Traditionally, in the past, when we have released freeware, we've gotten the original developer to say a few words about the release. This won't be the case with Tomb. When questioned about this, George's response was 'There's only six people who will care about this. '-
You know, something tells me that George wasn't one of those six.

Yeah, it's a platformer, but how is this game sidescrolling?
Anyway, I prefer Arctic Adventure. I made it through the shareware episode as a kid, and I was pleased to be able to download and finish all four episodes today (it helps A LOT to map the keyboard controls to a gamepad with, say, JoyToKey.

Thank you so much for the brutal honesty of thise evil game I remember from childhood. I've been playing too much Spelunky lately. and I was reminded of this classic trial of patience and determination not to smash the computer after playing it. Holy cow!

Growing up our local video store sold 5. 25- floppy disk games for $5. This was one of the better purchases we made from there. I remember being a kid and getting spooked when the skull would randomly show when quitting the game.

I also played this when I was very young, and ended up getting really good at it. I actually don't think I even knew about the save feature, so I got to the point where I could beat it in one run.
