Every Bridge For Every Situation, Explained By an Engineer - A World of Difference

Dr. Nehemiah Mabry, PE, knows a lot about bridges. Nehemiah is a structural engineer and an educator; and he builds bridges for a living. Dr. Mabry sits down with WIRED to talk about all different kinds of bridges from around the globe. What's the difference between a cable-stayed bridge and a suspension bridge? Are bridges in China different from bridges in the United States? Why do they decide to build one bridge over another type of bridge?

8: 18 into the video. now i didnt look very far at all down the comments but i didnt see anyone catch this videos mistake. so Dr Nehemiah Mabry was discribing the Langkawi Sky briede and when he stated that there was 8 wires holding the brigde i saw that he didnt account for the two behind the middle beam structure that is holding up the whole bridge. As it showed that photo of the bold white lines where the wires would be i counted them and found the other two. its funny to catch little mistakes like this in movies or what ever else. hahah i thought it was a little random thing to mention is all haha. Awsome video!

I've been reading all these reviews and everyone's tripping about the lighting on this guy. Who cares what the lighting's like, I never even noticed it until all these people said something on here. I just think it's interesting how these bridges are constructed and made, I've always been fascinated by Bridges and the construction of them especially over water is really interesting and cool. this guy definitely knows what he's talking about.

bruh the whole voiceover for the narrator sounds weird when his voice is played normally. just kinda throws off the vibe of the video. and PLEASE never light someone like that again. was that lighting on purpose? did they run out of lights? did they do it on purpose? so confused. they HAVE to know that that lighting does not look good

Good info! Perhaps a sequel will include such things as pavement types on bridges vs. on ordinary ground, what to do when designing a bridge where ice can occur, and the use of interlacing beams and other compensations for thermal expansion and contraction. There is much to learn on this subject.

The lighting on Dr. Mabry is insulting.
That said, otherwise this video is fantastic. I enjoyed the interview format; he-s a very engaging speaker! And the b-roll and graphics of the different bridge types went right along with what he was saying. Really enjoyed it!

Dr mabry did an incredible job explaining bridges, but every cut to narrator or him sitting there was so jarring. Once the editors saw how bad the lighting turned out they should have reduced cuts to him. Plenty of bridge shots to fill time.

Would love to know if suspensions bridges are best used over rivers and in earthquake areas, why the great belt bridge is a suspensions bridge, considering it is in Denmark which doesn-t really have any earthquakes and it-s over a ocean.

i took a Alcatraz ride around the bridge and it was a trip to drive in to the city over it then be under neath it its insane how they built that thing and the workers are always working on it on those slide cart things on the sides

theese people needs to pretty please call the dr engi to re-do the whole video but well done this time and also ask him about how to draw the tension-compresion arrows on the bridges. cuz as he already said 18: 53 he's got u

The best example of a suspension bridge is the Humber Bridge between the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England. At the time of completion, it had the longest span of any suspension bridge in the world.
