Samething happened in other Polynesian islands too. When European ships would come to the islands and trade their clothes, blankets and other things for the native's fruits, plants and other resources. then few years later the european ships came back and saw that nearly all the polynesians were dead/sick because of the sickness/disease that the european have given to them. and that sickness came from the clothes and blankets that the european gave to them to wear. and also that sickness was brought in from the ship rats. which is why our polynesian people almost got wiped out too like the mayans/south americans. and these sickness/disease is now in our genes past down from generation to generation for example cancer, etc. there were books and stories about this and now these stories are probably lost and forgotten. which is why our polynesian culture/history is almost forgotten and that we need to prepare our future generation to rebuild that connection or culture and try to bring back the way our ancestors used to live on the islands of the pacific. but i know for a fact that we were the ultimate navigators of the ocean and that noone knew how the natives navigate through the pacific ocean in search of land using without a compass. but i think, just recently a group of people did that in tahiti which they sailed from tahiti to the cook islands. they used the stars, waves, wind, sun and moon to navigate through the ocean just like how our ancestors used to do. and they succeded their journey. but yeah us polynesians need to remember where our ancestors came from or where we came from, and to bring our culture and history back to life again.

It's obvious that entruders attacked the people of the island bringing it to its knees quickly. Naturally native peoples don't wipe out their surroundings as they live on it aswel to survive. Fall of Civilizations did a deep dive on this, but basically the fall of Rapa Nui is believed to be attributed to disease brought by European explorers beginning with Rogeveen. It's also been proven that the did not use logs as rollers, and that the trees on the island were mainly cleared via slash and burn agriculture; even once the trees were gone they were very successful using a technique called rock mulching to grow crops and keep the soil in good condition.

More questions and idea from my 6th grade students: ) How could rats eat trees? If there was war why are there no bodies? And maybe it wasn't the Rapa Nui that decapitated the moai. Maybe it was colonizers or others who came to the eye who didn't want the moai to 'see' what they were doing to their people.

i bet you didnt know that after they cut down the last tree, they decided to build giant human like statues and place them on the ocean front so that anyone sailing by would know there are inhabitants and come to their rescue.
