How Rich Italians Used to Watch the Poor Fight for Food

There once was a Medieval land of plenty, known as Cockaigne, where food literally fell from the sky. It was imaginary, of course, but it was the over-the-top inspiration for a very real type of festival that was popular in Italy in the 1700s. It was known as cuccagna, and it represents an important if not slightly disturbing moment in Italian food culture. The aristocrats and royals would build temporary palaces and statues, which they covered with food and then - on their signal - allowed poor villagers to ransack

I was thinking I could cross dress as an italian man grab a knife and steal a bunch of bread and cheese till the video mentioned men were the ones allowed on the tower of gluttony but I could be mistaken if all peasants were involved

We still do the Greasy Pole in Gloucester every year. It's on a Peir built expressly for it out in the harbor. Everyone strings their boats up and watches and the shore is packed with spectators cause it happens during Fiesta

Everytime I hear someone say how hard it is to live in this day and age, I scoff because of all the disturbing shit that all the unhygienic, demented people in the medieval, tudor and renaissance ages had to live through

My Nonna and Nonno came to Canada only in 1957. Things they and my ancestors, dating as far back to this astound me. Its nothing short of a miracle they lived and were able to continue their lineage

I choked on my wine a little

Peasant now: This is our happy yearly festival symbolize of freedom from tyranny of Royal family!

Cuccagna seemed like a microcosm of class difference; Lower classes do awful things for survival. upper classes do awful things for entertainment.

This just reminds me of those cash give aways that aren't really. Give aways but scams because they know poor ppl are going to enter

Does anyone here know a book that covers this topic in greater detail? I can find so little information about the cuccagna online: /

I am suddenly extremely grateful that I was born an American in this century instead of being an Italian peasant in the 1700s.

Funny how animals being slaughtered out of sight is perfectly okay but being slaughtered in public is horrific.
reply

When it comes to animals, humans are a cancer. Eating animals is unnecessary and therefore unethical and immoral.

I guess these rich Italians ignored the the story of The Rich Man and Lazarus since they ended up in hell too.
