Contrary to Hollywood scripture, RL Cowboy Lyfe was less Rawhide and more A Million Ways to Die of Dysentery in the Desert. The life of a cowboy in the 1800s was a full plate of hard work, danger, and monotony with a heaping helping of dust, snakes, bugs, and beans on the side. Today were exploring what it was really like to be a cowboy in the wild west

I was raised in a family of cowboys, but I wouldn't dare consider myself a cowboy. I was raised in a fairly privilaged life, at least as far as comfort goes. When I was young I helped my mother and her ranchers build fence for their 1000s of goats my millionair grandfather owned. They had a local contract with our forest service to firewise with the goats, and constantly sold/butchered them to keep themselves from buckling their finances at the end of the year. Growing up I saw a lot of what I call shit kickers, or my personal slang for those who dressed the part but never even set foot on a ranch. Most of them throughout highschool, and they dressed that way for the look. Pristine new jeans, shirts, hats. Not once have these seen enough dirt to provide any type of efficient use. So I strayed away from the thought and wear, typically because I don't like being a hypocrite. However as I grew older I have slowly adopted the look and found how practical the old cowboy wear was. Starching my clothes and washing them as little as possible has proven effective due to my busy life, as the starch has kept my single pair of clothes clean for up to a month minus my underwear and socks. Living as a working class in poverty, researching and questioning my mother about that culture is what helps me save money during the months to pay rent and get by. These people were a hardy bunch, and I still laugh when I see shit kickers wear the clothes just to call themselves a cowboy. It's on par with seeing a rich person who can't cook but calls themselves a pro chef. I've seen some people who can't be self efficient walk around in chaps, spurs, and leather vest. They've probably never rode a horse. It ruins what people think built the west to what it is today. The west wasn't fun, it was hard work and a lot of people died. If you can't walk the walk, don't talk the talk either.

Yea my friend seen this video and really thought that black gunslingers are not true it's lies lol and he's black so you know he felt he would know the truth and me being 29 and white myself lol so I literally had to prove to my best friend that the lone ranger film and stories were actually about a black gunslinger Bass Reeves and it blew my friends mind fr he literally never knew it or believed there were black gunslingers during old western times. So after I proved it to him he's been telling other black people about this and how there had black cowboy gunslingers lol it really had him so excited once I proved it and wish I could do it again he was happy ASF and still does alot of research and teaching others about bass reeves the black gunslinger

While I cant comment on being one in the old west. I can comment on being a cowboy in the modern south. I cowboy for a few different ranches in both Polk and Hardee counties in Florida. Its hot work, riding horses hurts. Cows are not as soft and cuddly as youd think. Even baby cows (Calves) will kick and charge you. We still use whips, lassoes. We dont wear chaps in Florida as the grass doesnt grow high enough to warrant it. We do still wear cowboy hats and boots with spurs as they are all necessary.

I worked as a wrangler taking Dudes into the back country. You wouldnt believe how many city folk told me they could handle any horse I could bring them complaining if the horses wasnt lively enough. Every trip would bring on a rodeo if a hornet nest appeared or something spooked the animal.
Never a dull moment.

In Australia, we don't have cowboys. we have cattlemen. In the 1840s, my G-G-Gpa was one, but also an overlander: .He drove herds of cattle long distances over unsettled mountains and plains.
By the way. there was once a cattle station (ranch) here that was bigger than Texas. They sold off part of it, and now there are two.
Just kidding, but not far off.

As someone that deals with cattle, there is one more thing aside from rattlesnakes, apache raids, coyotes, etc. there's the fact that you are dealing with cattle, and if you've never experienced a fit of bovine rage, well consider yourself lucky lol.

The proper pronunciation of the leather leggings is shaps. As in chaparral plant. A very thorny plant that would tear up a vaquerro back in the day. Vaquerros would even armour their horses in leather to protect them as well.

Hollywood has portrayed cowboys as heroes. In truth, the general population hated cowboys. They called them shot kickers. They had a hard life. Thunder storms, flash floods, rattlesnakes, Indians, etc.

Cowboys were far more diverse than just by race for the same reasons - Lots of neat stories about trans cowboys are around such as Harry Allen whose whole story is fascinating.

Basic guild lines ruled the day. Do right or pay the price. No second chances, no understanding and no forgiveness. How do you think those saying we have all heard came from?

Actually there should be Western movies showing the relationships to the cows, showing stampedes and how they cowboys sang to their cattle like little Disney princesses.

I am a cowboy in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Rattlesnakes are a dally occupational hazard but coyotes don't hurt humans.

Technically only indigenous, black, and brown men were cowboys and the white/European ones were called ranchers

Big misconception being slung out here, your very first cowboy came on the scene in North Florida period.
