The Dark Origins of Cinderella

In large part thanks to Disney's version of her story, Cinderella is a familiar fairy tale character. The girl is maltreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, and essentially ends up as their servant. When it comes time for a royal celebration, Cinderella can't attend - until the intervention of her fairy godmother, some lovable creatures, and a magical gourd. By the time the tale ends, Cinderella finds her Prince - well, he finds her - and they live happily ever after. But this is just one telling of Cinderella, and it's a fairly tame one.

When I was a kid we went to see a strange live action movie version of Cinderella and it did contain the part about the shoe not fitting on the stepsisters and the actions taken! There was a talking bird that let the prince know that it saw blood on the shoe! until eventually Cinderella tried it on! Very strange! Haha!

We have kept all the negative ( though famous and popular ) childhood stories from our 5 year old granddaughter, all are either sad, scary or insensitive, want my child to hear happy stories, high time all stories for children upto 10 years, only have happy things going on in the story

I remember watching an animated Chinese version of Cinderella on CBS Storybreak one saturday morning in the 80s where a young Chinese girl finds a magical fish that try's to help her get the prince, but her evil stepmother ended up eating him. But his spirit came back to help her

Good to hear you voice again bub. Your replacement is no where near to being your peer. Was raised on the original Grimm works and others so I have therefore hated Disney since I was a very young child for literally ruining my favourites.

I am German an therefor normally prefer the Grimm (or other author's) original version. But Disney's Cinderella was my first VHS that I got on my second birthday and so it always holds a special place in my heart.

I was listening to Sylvia Lykins's absolute horror story. It reminded me of Cinderella & I wondered if a a story like that was the inspiration for the original Cinderella.

my favorite disney princess. I remember when i was in my middle school German class, my teacher told me the german version and I was shocked.

The original little mermaid was tragic. I'm glad Disney changed it. The original one was depressing. Don't want to break little hearts that early.

So many cultures have a virtually identical stories. You d think that maybe cruel stepmothers are a common real-life thing. Oh wait
reply

I encourage anyone to read the original Grimms Fairy Tales stories. They aren't the stories your mom read you from a golden book.
reply

Yeah if you know about fairy tales only from Disney when you read The Originals you're going to be in for a rude awakening.
