Download a free audiobook version of Slaughterhouse Five and support TED-Ed's nonprofit mission: Check out our full book recommendation: Kurt Vonnegut found the tidy, satisfying arcs of many stories at odds with reality, and he set out to explore the ambiguity between good and bad fortune in his own novels. He tried to make sense of human behavior by studying the shapes of stories ditching straightforward chronologies and clear-cut fortunes. Mia Nacamulli dives into the sometimes dark, yet hopeful works of Vonnegut. Lesson by Mia Nacamulli, directed by TED-Ed

I first remember watching Slaughterhouse 5 from the dirt road south of Coral Way Cinema. I was 10 yrs old on my bicycle. This was here in Miami, Fla. It was the first drive-in in the US that had an air-conditioning hose you could attach to the side window. Of course, for me on my Schwinn there was the rare chance of meeting up with some big knarly dude not happy with your presence next to the barb wire fence. Well, that was 1969 for you. Wear a mask peoples. Thanks Ted-Ed.

I have gotten introduced to Kurt through the Harrison Bergeron short story. That story got me thinking a lot, about our philosophical and ideological aspirations and meanings we fit to way of life. Looking forward to exploring more of his stories.

Just finished Cats Cradle a few days ago. My first Vonnegut book and I loved it. I immediately ordered Slaughterhouse Five, Sirens of Titan, Welcome to the Monkey House and Breakfast of Champions on Amazon. Cant wait to read them.

This is one of my favorite videos on youtube. I just find it to be well written as well as well narrated, and the illustrations are so on point it's astonishing.
P. S: If you're ever in Cody, Wyoming, just ask for Wild Bob

Please everyone, do yourselves a favor and read Sirens of Titan by Vonnegut. After reading all of amazing stories, Sirens in particular has left an impression and I've made it a habit of re reading it several times already

I read Slaughterhouse 5 because the boy I liked in high school wrote his Senior Paper in Lit class about it. I've read it a few times since then (20 years) and it remains one of my favorite books.

Is he aware he's become unstuck from time and taht his experiences are not in chronological order.
Becaues that's where I might take issue with the plot's philosophical implications.

I think it is amazing that carefully planned and explored story shape can lead to creativity as wild as aliens and time travel! Reading and writing really is a process!

Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly, man go to ask himself 'why, why, why? ', tiger got too sleep, bird got to land, man got to tell himself he understand.

I find this frustrating as there's more time explaining what the novel plots are than actually explaining why they're important to read.
