I basically learn different songs. i prefer songs I like to listen to or my ears can handle
to analysis. it'll keep me INTERESTED.
The songs i pick are songs with different moments, cadence. boorowed
chords/modes..ect...I'll simply borrow those ideas. Apply it to my own songs. Tweek it
here and there to my liking...or I might hear a chord colored a certain way that's not
usually done on my instrument of choice..but it sounds totally cool when I apply it
even thou the tamber is different ..ect..but I'll still try to mimic the chord or sound
of that sequence.ect
example...this chord. It from... Melody of Tears
It's the V chord...but it's add, 11, with the b7 stack on top.
It;s not an easy chord to play on the guitar..becuase I'll have to make
a G Maj barr chord shape and reach over to the 1 st fret with my index to play
the C and F note on the top two strings...it's a 5 fret stretch.
So I wrote a song around that chord...it's a simple I, IV, V moment
but the chords are colored different. The song has a softer easy listening sound.
The first chord is C Barr chord shap C, 5, octive with open top B , E string
the next chord is F maj7 add#11...it's just and incomplete F Maj chord with the B and E.
The next chord is G 7 add 11, ..it just incomplete G maj with the C and F note play
with my index finger....it'll pull you back into the I chord again...so you can loop it.
I'll also play the Bb maj7 chord with Open E....( the N6) chord into A min
It sounds pretty....it has maj3 and tritone from Bb.
It'll play it into the Open A min chord....then right after I'll stack the F note below the
A min/F....it create a cool..Some sort of excitement sound for the bridge...ect
The chords are arpeggiate or as if picked as if Im playing a HARP.
I'll strike these chords...jazzy sort of feel.
For an alternative cadence.. Inverted D min...to E min slide to F min and back to Emin
into A min.....The F min chord is from the A Harmonic min ( F lydian #2) or C harmonic
Maj ( F lydian b3)
i usually play all the chords in the Major scale in all my songs ..even the dimisnished

Let me add to say this. It gives chances to know something better. If it's about something you love, doesn't it sound exciting?
