Wondering what to do with a melody you've written? How could you go about turning it into a piece? In this music composition lesson we start with a melody in a minor key, then work out how best to harmonise it, considering various different ways of presenting the texture, in a more homophonic or more contrapuntal way, and how to go about turning it into a piece in multiple styles. If you would like to know how to harmonise a melody in a minor key, then how to work the results into an interesting texture then this music composition lesson is for you. Having worked out the most successful harmony, does it work best in block chords, or in broken chords, or in imitation? So many possibilities and this music composition lesson opens up a good range of options. to what to do with a melody? 0:19 - Listening to the written melody 1:22 - Baroque style treatment 9:28 - Classical style treatment 10:29 - Romantic style treatment 11:32 - Modern styles treatment

Thank you so much for this! You make this topic so clear to me, someone rather insufficiently trained in music. I'm a poet/playwright currently trying my had at writing a musical theater piece. I want to include a musical number in which two characters are singing different melodies in counterpoint. This tutorial really helped me understand how to create the contrapuntal meter in my lyrics so I eventually can explain what I need to a musical composer-if I can find one! In an earlier comment, Neil Walsh said: -We need composers. That's the modern dilemma-. I wholeheartedly agree. The 2017 film -Score: A Film Music Documentary- opened my eyes to that world.

Thank you for your video full of ideas. I was wondering if you could share the score you used for the -romantic- version of the accompaniment? I really like that sound but the video is too fast and I could not catch it.
Also I like very much your explanation of how to write the -Baroque- style step by step. Can you post more video on this as well? This is more interesting than the dry species counterpoint I am now learning.

I always thought classical composers like Bach had tricks up their sleeves that they took to the grave even though they trained many people (Kirnberg, CPE etc), but here we are with some of those ideas. Folks, please support the online lessons from music matters! Beyond gold!

Hello, I had a quick question regarding the chords. How do you identify which chord does a bar belong in as you showed in the video? If playing each chord and trying to find the one that fits to the notes in a bar, do the passing notes have to be considered as well?

Excellent and very helpful tutorial. I loved the variation beginning at 10:35. I've noticed in all you videos how you make such good use of dynamics. I'm not sure if you've done a tutorial on dynamics but if not can I request one? Many thanks.

Gareth, sorry this is off topic. You have lots of excellent videos on modulation, but would appreciate one on -modulating- from one time signature to another. -
