Listening to three short phrases of music and singing each phrase back as an echo, as accurately as you can. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 1 practical exams. We give you lots of helpful advice on how best to tackle this part of the grade 1 aural test. Many people are a bit apprehensive about singing. This is not a test of your singing ability, just to see how accurately you are able to repeat the notes. If you are going to sing back notes, try and hear the notes in your head before you sing it back, make sure you stand up tall and take a deep breath so you are able to sing with more confidence. For grade 1, the examiner will play a chord that helps you to feel the key of the music. Then the examiner will play a phrase (a short handful of notes) and you're going to try to sing that phrase back just like an echo. This is going to happen three times. In other words, the examiner plays a phrase, then you sing it back, they play the second phrase, you sing it back, a third phrase is played and then you sing it back. Practice pitching and singing various notes on a piano before trying to sing back a few short phrases. to grade 1 aural tests 1:02 - Advice on singing 2:59 - How does this test work? 3:46 - Practice pitching notes 13:47 - An example of how to approach this test 17:44 - Practice tests - Grade 1 Aural Tests Course When it comes to music exams, candidates often prepare themselves well for the playing but are less sure when it comes to the Aural Tests. Hello, Thank you for uploding such a clear video, it's helped me a lot. I have never taken an abrsm test before and I don't know which grade I should start with, because in terms of pieces I can play grade 5, and for the rest (aural and sight reading)I have never had training. I would happily start at the beginning with grade one but the exams are very expensive. So I was wondering if starting at grade 2 or 3, without having a teacher or previous exam experience would be suicide. Thank you in advance.

Oh Sir ! You-re the best professor of music of the Net, you-re explanation of music is outstanding. I-ve been studying music for 5 months from different sites and you just blow them away with your approach and theory that is so easy to understand from a beginner like me .I-m 65 years old and never played piano of my life, but you-re giving me the strength and courage to pursue my dream of playing piano and understanding music .
Thank you so much Garreth for your patience and teaching skills.

Love the videos, just watched the one in grade 6 about cadences. Was hoping to go through all the videos methodically, where can I find Grade 1 Aural Lesson 1?
It doesn't seem to be coming up in a search. Thanks.

VERY HELPFUL THING!
If you are going/have gone through puberty, you CAN ask the examiner to change the range of scales down/up!
So you won't just awkwardly fail to sing the higher notes!

Thanks! This video is really helpful. Just wondering are there any benefits practising the singing back using solfege instead?
