How did Zheng He Explore The World? I have worked in west Africa where there is a large community of couple of millions which had migrated there from central Africa. They have names like Chia, Hua, Tse, etc. and their language sounds very much like Chine. Some letters the Chinese cannot pronounce they too have problems with them.
From the way Chng Ho behaved when he visited Sri Lanka with his sixty odd ships I can imagine what they would do when they have the upper hand where ever they go.
Probably it was Prince Henry the navigator who put a stop to it by giving their sailors the advantage of astronavigation and superior firepower. They seem to have caught up with the technology, too. But they seem to be getting addicted to technology and greed ruined their environment with devastating results, by breaking down the immunity the mankind had for various deceases.\r\n

The purpose of Zheng He's expedition was to find any descendant of deceased Emperor Ming Jianwen because Emperor Ming Yongle feared Jianwen's descendants would come back to overthrow him. During Zheng He's expedition, Ming Yongle ordered the conquest of Dai Ngu in the South because Vietnamese emperors used to support Ming Jianwen's ascendancy to the throne. Of course, Yongle's primary purpose for the conquest was to extinguish any support for the previous Ming Jianwen since there were rumors that Ming Jianwen's descendants were in Vietnam. In the end, it was confirmed that both Zheng He and Ming expedition forces in Dai Ngu could not find any descendant of Ming Jianwen.

Kudos for bringing up Zheng He's Mongolian affiliation besides his Muslim background. His voyages should be put in the context of previous Mongolian voyages. With Mongolians controlling areas covering both modern day China and Iran, their fleets traversed among Mongolian controlled ports. Zheng served the Ming emperor who usurped the dynasty and moved the capital to the site preferred by Mongolian and other nomadic powers. Eventually, the nomadic spirits of Mongolian culture died out in Ming and minorities in the empire were turned into tools of inward suppression.

Zheng He is not a Muslim. There are a lot of historical records in China that he is a Buddhist. Zheng He is a descendant of Semu people who were captured by the Ming army (possibly because the Ming Dynasty attacked Yunnan and captured a large number of Semu people and were castrated and become slaves) ) The main source of Semu people is the slaves brought back to China after the massacre in Central Asia during Temujin's Western Expedition, that is, the ancestors of the Hui people in China today.

I often wonder if the land bridge from Siberia and Alaska had not sunk underneath the sea. What would the technological evolution of the America-s would have been like if, the native Peoples of the America-s had developed trade: ideas, literature, writing, metallurgy, science, engineering, ship building, spices and other luxurious goods, with China and India. Imagine if they had brought horses to the America-s, earlier on and the practical use of the wheel.

Ma He's real last name was Sayyid Ajjal Shams al-Din. His ancestor Sayyid Ajjal Shams al-Din Omar was a Persian noble who worked for Kublai Khan. The voyages weren't completely peaceful, and Zheng had especially engaging battles in Sri Lanka where he essentially traded places with the defenders, with his ships captured by Sri Lanka's usurper and Zheng captured the capital instead. He would also get his own change to visit Mecca for a pilgrimage on his 7th voyage.

This didn't explain what he did at all, other than -he went from China to Saudi Arabia and took the same route 7 times. - No mention of what lands he discovered, how much of his route was undiscovered, what he achieved on his travels (other than grabbing a giraffe) or why he just took the same route over and over and over.
I was hoping for a Chinese James Cook or Marco Polo; instead I got a super vague and lame story.

A lot of the written records were burned by subsequent administrations so as to dissuade further voyages. These voyages were extravagant and not really necessary since sea trade already flourished in Asia, and moreover the subsequent administrations wanted to shift their focus towards pacifying the north. These voyages might've been useful had China wanted to do colonialism as the Europeans did, but China didn't.

China-s CULTURAL REVOLUTION PURGE under despot Chairman Mao destroyed so much culture and records of their past. Got to believe as fastidious as the Chinese were on record keeping that some authentic written accounts of these fleets might yet surface. Current CHINA is just as unsettled now as during Mao-s days so cannot help think secret places still hold secret information.

The story about Zheng He exploring the world is a novel, and was dressed up as a history. The dressing can be clearly seen only if you had learned enough of the story. For instance, if you go deeper, you will find that all the hundreds of ships appeared suddenly and disappeared suddenly. Of course such supernatural phenomena must mean novel, never will it mean history.

It is said one of the reasons for his wanting to travel the first time was to go for Hajj; and he did manage to go to Mecca, he may not have been there during Hajj; but when it is not Hajj season people can do the mini-pilgrimage called Umrah which is what he probably did. No title is given after this, hence it was not widely known that he visited Mecca.

Although Chinese accounts start getting a little fuzzy after Mombasa it is possible Zheng He made it all the way to the Cape of Good Hope. Chinese pottery and coins have been found as far south as Great Zimbabwe. Asian maps from the period also depict the southern tip of Africa in extraordinary detail.

Its always interesting to hear about others expeditions before Columbus travels. Imagine being a random chinese and seeing a goddamm giraffe for the first time, I would also go whack
Its a shame (and rather dumb) Hongxi chose to stop international relationships and exploration

Zheng He's fleet was very kind and did not invade the countries he had visited. Instead, he gave those countries many gifts from the Ming State. In contrast, the Europeans massacred the indigenous people in America and Oceania on a large scale and made Asia and Africa as colonies!

After becoming castrated he became a friend of his enemy: ) I mean I would hate to death the guy who just chopped off my D, I would even die for it- that-s why probably he became a legend for centuries to know, and I am just a simple Dagestani guy: )

One of Zheng He's ships was shipwrecked off the coast of Kenya near Pate Island and some of the sailors survived and settled in a village on the island. There is still a small community on the island who are descendants of the shipwrecked sailors

Knowledgia: You called the Zheng He -quite a unique story-. I think it was too unique to be a history. It can only be a romantic story like any romantic novels. For instance, Zheng He's ships and soldiers appeared instantly and disappeared instantly also.

1000 years to years of years before Colombus discovered America, Houi Shin, a Chinese explorer called the land he discovered as Fujin, all according to the vast records he gave, the land was concluded with modern day Mexico. Which is in America.
reply

Technically, he didn't. He did go on the trade route established by the Arabs on the Ocean. You can say he explore the world when it comes to the perspective of the Chinese, but the trade route on the sea existed way before him.
reply

China didn-t have ambition to colonize back then even though they have the capability but the influence of chinese culture is very prominent in the region visited by his exploration especially in south east asia
reply

Bad luck of Zeng he and his Emperor was that they had no enemy in the ocean. So they simply do not develop and maintain their fleet. And many years later in opium war chinese fleet was devastated by british navy.

It is amazing that we are still having speculative debates about Zheng He's exploits after the record of his expedition to America has been discovered, translated and published. Read TO THE GATES OF FENGTU.

My elementary education in Taiwan
taught all the official records were purged and burned due to some unclear political reasons.
what a great loss for not only China, but the whole of humanity.

China became isolationist after Zheng He's death. Imagine if those voyages had occurred a few decades earlier, the fleet would have come into direct contact and competition with Portugal's fleet.
reply

It is amazing that the huge Chinese fleets did not colonised the countries that they visited, unlike the European explorers. We read this part of history in Vietnam university with amazement.
reply

It's amazing to think of historical cultures coming into contact with the outside world. Henry III of England (13th century) was given a polar bear from the king of Norway as a present

1644 End of Ming dynasty- that was the end of real Central Kingdom/-China-
What came after was colonization- it ended Central Kingdom/-China- and changed its culture (for the worst-.

Zheng He is very well know here in Indonesia. we call him admiral Cheng Ho. if you find a mosque in Indonesia with a Chinese architectural style, it is the Cheng Ho mosque.

Every freaking time that ship gets bigger and bigger. The story is a fable about how big the boat is! 200 feet, then 300 feet, now it's 400 feet. nah it was 1000 feet!

I've been scrolling past this video for the last week thinking you messed up your grammar intentionally. It just hit me today that the name is not -Zheng- but -Zheng He-
