Why was Ireland Neutral in WW2?

Why was Ireland Neutral in WW2? Ireland wanted its sovereignty which is understandable. Who wouldnt? Denmark? Belgium? Netherlands? France? Poland? Luxembourg? Every one wanted to self govern. Except of course Germany, who was enslaving all of Europe and slaughtering civilians with their armies and aircraft. Blitzkrieg was indiscriminate murder of soldier, civilian and child. The rounding up of Jews long before the war showed the intent of the Germans be they soldier or civilian.
To stand neutral against such a monstrous threat to humanity while millions are murdered and tens of thousands of soldiers are dying to stave off the German takeover is more than inexcusable. It is damnable. Ireland should have accepted its responsibility to the rest of Europe and put off its arguments with England to fight alongside the British in defense of all freedom loving people. Instead they used their argument with England to stay out of the conflict.
A question to everyone Irish. do you really believe you would have had your sovereignty after a German victory? Ireland turned a blind eye to the evil done at the hands of Germany to all its neighbors, not just the British.
Split hairs if you wish, but you cannot convince the world you so called -fighting Irish- did not cover your bases and hedge your quiet bets while the rest of Europe bled and burned.\r\n

That's a nice story, as my mother would say. You omitted a lot of information. Perhaps you are uninformed, or perhaps it is just practical. The story is enjoyable either way. The IRA and the S plan were left out of your statement. They were not impartial; they were keeping quiet as the war progressed in order to deal with Nazi Germany; and their involvement, as well as the task they were supposed to carry out of attacking military targets rather than civilians. Remember Joe Kennedy and his covert talks with Mussolini? He believed the British were going to lose, as evidenced by the fact that he was fired from his position in England and barred from ever running for public office in the United States. The only decent Irishman I've observed in my lifetime is Bobby Sands.

Neutrality is a fantasy. WW2 is evidence enough of that. Ask Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark and Norway how great Neutrality is. The only reason we in Ireland haven-t abandoned Neutrality and the practice of having a small underfunded military is because the Nazis didn-t have the amphibious capabilities to attack us in WW2, so that 1930s pacifist naivety never died here like it did in other countries.
It is a sign of the times when a nation like Sweden is finally abandoning its Neutrality for the first time since the Napoleonic Era. This new Cold War is far more aggressive than the last, and we need friends fast

Ireland was still having famines right up until the war of independence. It was an incredibly poor country especially in the west ( where I lived) pretty much until recent times. Then it went through two wars. It would have been a really bad idea to get involved in a war between England and Germany. There have been plenty of worse genocides in Africa and around the globe. Ireland doesn't get involved in those wars either. However Ireland did provide support to the Americans during WWII and they still provide peacekeeping in places such as the middle east etc.
reply

I suppose a better question to ask would be, why should the Irish have gotten involved? Why someone remains neutral is always a simple question to answer. Because whatever war that is being fought is not their concern, and the detriments of said war clearly outweigh the benefits. If more countries were like Ireland or Switzerland, I think we would have alot less problems in this world.

If Germany had won the war Ireland's neutrality would not have saved it from Nazi aggression. They would have been occupied by German forces and forced to provide slave labour to the German war machine. The softening of their neutrality towards the end of the war in favour of the Allies was simply reacting to the reality that Germany would eventually be defeated.
reply

With hindsight, it's hard to see what Ireland could have done differently other than remain neutral. They didn't have the military or economic strength to fight and anything they could have provided wouldn't have made any real difference. If Ireland had joined, Germany would have leveled Irish cities. As De Valera beleived, small states suffer in big states wars.
reply

If the Irish had a military that could help out against Germans, they would of already been at war with the British. That being said plenty of Irish Catholics joined the British army in WW2. My grandma and his sister both joined the British army. Really worked out for Ilene his sister whom became literate and ultimately a nurse!

Finland and Sweden have now BEGGED to be able to join NATO. Can anyone elighten me on why Southern Ireland (Eire) are not members of NATO please. as it seems very strange that they are allowed to participate in the EU. but don-t commit to NATO MEMBERSHIP? Are they just as scared as they were in WWII?
reply

England: We still control the northern region who we have brainwashed with our politics and religion, have slaughtered and raped your people for hundreds of years and have kept you poor and enslaved and have intentionally starved.
Why arent you idiots more friendly to us?

Three minutes in and he already has his facts wrong: Ireland did not -merge- with UK in 1801, union was forced upon it. The Anglo-Irish War was mostly fought in smaller towns and villages, not Dublin and Belfast. And Ireland was partitioned in 1920, not 1921.

Just to point out for future, the Isle of Man featured on your map has never been part of the United Kingdom nor the EU. It is a self governed island with the oldest running parliament in the world.
reply

Because GB almost killed the entire Irish population. Because Queen Victoria send young Irish girls to the 'Americas' saying that the girls where slaves, and less than dogs. need another reason?
reply

Irish neutrality at a time when human decency was fighting for survival at its doorstep is a sad stain on the country's history. an utter failure of its political leaders at the time.
reply

As a citizen of a former Dominion, all of which sent troops to a war to help Britain in a war that had nothing to do with them, I have to say, the Paddies should be ashamed.
reply

Irish President was right not to trust English. Unification would't have happened since an English promise is an empty promise and Germans could have bombed Ireland heavily
reply

i think if if you want to be a knowledge of History, most of the above is inaccurate, you need to go into irish Nationalism a bit deeper than generlisations
reply

reply

I think people are being a bit harsh towards the video. Yes there were a few inaccuracies but overall was a very good explanation where Ireland stood during WW2.
reply

And I thought their perfidy was more recent; the invention of the car bomb by the IRA and their anti-Semitism disguised as disagreeing with Israel's policies.
reply

You forgot to mention that civil war included The assassination of some high up military officers by the IRA the biggest name is Michael Collins.
reply

Let's cut through the crap, Ireland remained neutral because they did not have an army or air force so they had no choice but to be neutral.
reply

Ireland was not neutral in ww2. Donegal Corridor was one of many concessions to allies and under international law violates his neutrality.
reply

Never have I heard so much shite in one short piece the inaccurate and crap facts is truly sad, truly awful, and I am an Irish man.
reply

as an irish person, i wish ireland joined the war so ireland could unite, even if they got invade completly, they would be liberated,
reply

Ireland was only a land of religious peasantry, they just couldn't be expected to toe the line for their previous controller Britain
reply

The Irish free state army was not pro-British, pro-treaty that was signed prior to the civil war, so historic inaccuracies in this vid
reply

Maybe and who knows if a civil war happens. in the United states. we could be like Ireland 2 different states in one county
reply

Without watching the video, I'm going to assume it was because they hated the U. K. and didn't want to ally with them on anything.
reply

A slave colony with no influence.
Eire had no means to change the
artificial ritual war even if they wanted to.
