300 were chosen to remain BEHIND as a GESTURE, as much for Spartan pride as to set an example.
And these 300 were chosen not only with born sons to carry on their name, but from families that would celebrate their demise for the glorification of Sparta, rather than public displays of grief for what most Greeks would consider a pointless death.
And this last stand was brought about by the Greek goat herder Ephialtes and his local knowledge of the Anopea trail, a goat path that he used. Ephialtes guided a picked force of Immortals to the rear of the Greek position, and then promptly demanded payment for his services, which so incensed the Immortals commander on the spot that he ran him through with his sword for his troubles.
All this is quite well known.

Thermopylae
Honor to those who in the life they lead
define and guard a Thermopylae.
Never betraying what is right,
consistent and just in all they do
but showing pity also, and compassion;
generous when they're rich, and when they're poor,
still generous in small ways,
still helping as much as they can;
always speaking the truth,
yet without hating those who lie.
And even more honor is due to them
when they foresee (as many do foresee)
that Ephialtis will turn up in the end,
that the Medes will break through after all.

To talk about only 300 Spartans is to not know history. About 7, 500 ancient Greek hoplites took part in the defense of the Thermopyli pass, with 300 Spartans making up the core of the fighting force. The Greeks, as always, love to exaggerate. The feat of these people is indeed enormous, but the whole truth must be told about the heroic defense of this strategically important pass and not belittle the role of the allied, Greek troops who fought side by side with the Spartans against the Persian hordes.

I teach primary.
I introduced a Friday activity that was basically rough housing - it was awesome.
On the final day of the year, we had Box Wars. All students and teachers made an outfit out of cardboard, and we had a battle.
I made a Spartan outfit with a musculatum cuirass, lamda-inscripted hoplon, xiphos, greaves, and crested helm. It gave me the opportunity to turn it into a history lesson.
Best day of school EVER!

terrible graphics. outfits dont match and phalanx tactics dont use and no armor or bows. The game units are not right. They use spears like swords. Dont use shields. Dont do basic phalanx tactics. In this case the total war units are just wrong. They appear to only use shields against bows and how come byzantine heavy cavalry are being used. Sorry - its distracting

WELL NO! Actually the Body guards of Sparta's King (the 300) were joined by several hundred other city state soldiers. and only when it was clearly a matter of attrition. they, Spartans, stood Alone to die without quarter! By then The Naval genius Themistocles had whipped (along with a timely storm) the Persian fleet off the coast just south of this hallowed pass. GBjj

actually, there were 278 Spartans, the rest went sick that morning, the reason the Persians held off for so long was they did not have the Pass or paper work in order which annoyed the Greeks who were building a holiday complex nearby, and the Persians were notorious for not paying their bills, yours Pythagoras

This story gets more ridiculous with each telling. The fact that the entire Western World believes it, whilst the rest of the world chuckles, tells us something. History seems full of civilised Europeans resisting hordes from elsewhere. I love the smell of supremacy on the morning!

The Persians attacked Greece because Athens and Eretria had send hope to the Ionian Greek cities of Asia Minor when they revolted against Persia. I find it strange that you would choose to make a video about a battle of the Graeco-Persian wars and not know that.

The modern battle of thermopyl:

1582 battle of cagayan. 40 spanish tercios against 1000 samurai. or
1520 battle of Tenochtitlan. 400 spanish soldiers against 30. 000 aztec

Love the video. You could probably eliminate those texture pop-ins with a script extender add-on. I'm sure that they probably exist for Total War as they do with other games. I've used them with the Fallout New Vegas and 4 mostly.
reply

I wonder about the shape of the thermopylae. Reportedly there were just 15 m at the average with even smaller passages. The video here gives a completely different impression

Spartan were actually 30000 not 300
They fought in groups of 300, because of narrow valley. Get your facts right. Stop fabrication. 0: 33

The depiction of the battle is very poor. The battle was fought in a very restricted space not in an open plain.
reply

great. just pack in using BCE. ITS BC. BEFORE CHRIST. otherwise you might end up doing dates from the 7th century
reply

I don't think you guys know much about math. 300 can never hold off thousands no matter what the circumstances.

Europe in 2024 is currently facing another agressive invasion, wave after wave of illegal aliens of fighting age.
