Today, we wrap up our discussion of the console wars by taking a look at Microsoft-s Xbox which was announced in 2001. The early 2000s saw a lot of innovation in hardware and games and we-ll cover some of that, but one significant change that would heavily influence the industry was actually pioneered by that doomed Sega Dreamcast was Internet connectivity. Sony-s Playstation 2, released in 2000, and Nintendo-s GameCube, released in 2001, would also include ways to get online, but Xbox-s implementation of a fully unified network that allowed gamers to compete across consoles was the first of its kind. Now, PCs gamers had been playing across networks, particularly within the popular MMORPG genre, since the mid 90s and we-ll spend a couple episodes taking a closer look at the PC's influence, but today we-re going to focus specifically on how the Internet on consoles helped lead to the prevalence of the competitive gaming and online gaming communities we see today. -Grand Theft Auto 3. Was one of the first 3D open worlds. - Uhh. No. 3D open world games were being made for at least a decade when GTA 3 was released. GTA 3 released in 2001. I vividly remember playing 1991's Hunter on Amiga 600, and that was a 3D polygon open sandbox world, in which you could do missions, use a huge variety of weapons, and drive a surprising number of vehicles, including cars, bikes, tanks, boats, helicopters, and more. That was a full decade before GTA 3, and I'm fairly sure Hunter wasn't the first.
Even the developer of GTA 3 - DMA Design, had made a fully 3D open world sandbox type game in 1998. It was called Body Harvest, and it too had a number of weapons to use, and a ridiculous amount of vehicles, including boats and aircraft. So GTA 3 wasn't even the first open world game made by DMA Design, let alone one of the first ever made.

I want to personally extend my thanks and gratitude for this series. I work in a retro collectibles shop where we sell all of the merchandise you talk about here for like the past 5-6 episodes, and sadly I'm not very video game literate. This series has greatly helped me improve my familiarity and basic knowledge of the video gaming world. Seriously. This is going to make my job a lot easier now. Thank you guys.

In my younger years, before I went on to get a BS in Finance, I got an AAS in game design. I was on the same team for years with Jason Zimmerman (Mew2King. We developed the Gentlemen Robots games, and much of our success was due to his massive online media presence.

A sequel series on game design would be nice, and maybe even one on the slowly evolving field of game criticism, although this would be difficult because many games have not gotten the same treatment as films when it comes to artistic critics

Again, something wrong. Well, not wrong, just not mentioned.
The Dreamcast's game input was GD's (Gigadiscs, not CDs. Also, the US first received a bigger controller than what was in the video. GC's discs were proprietary, not mini DVDs.

Ohhhh gods, I'm so bothered by the nomenclature for the handhelds: it's two words, -Game Boy-, and. -Gameboy DS-? Pleeaase.
I noticed some mistake earlier in the series, but count this as my tipping point to comment on it.

Was fable just praised for an -innovative- morality system? How about Fallout, which came out a few years earlier? Or even Fallout 2, which still came out years before Fable.
reply

Its quite a fact that a powerful system doesn't always mean fun gaming. A console, in my opinion, is for playing games. I don't want nor do I need it to watch dvd movies.
