Actually in a nuclear strike your desk wasn't a bad option. Unless you were in the hypocenter - most deaths in Japan were from buildings collapsing from the overpressure. Yes there's still a lot of heat, but the overpressure created hurricane force winds that would implode buildings. Naturally, there's a lot of radiological differences in fallout between an atomic bomb and a thermonuclear bomb (depending on wind patters, but the immediate impact outside the hypocenter is still physical/mechanical vs incineration. Source: my father who worked on nuclear weapons programs - yes we found most cold-war films amusing as the idea you would be stuck in traffic ala The Day After was hilarious (given the 15 minute detection to impact scenario and the likelihood the public wouldn't be informed of inbounds anyway as govt leaders would be too busy directing a response and taking shelter - what's the point of telling someone they're going to die in 15 minutes (or less as you have confirmation to deal with? There's not enough time to do anything meaningful apart from scrambling for the basement - or hiding under your desk.
The Cold War was terrifying - but it's that fear which created the largest non-world-war era in human history. I kind of miss it.
Oh fun side-note - the first indication you're being hit with a nuke isn't the visible flash. The first emissions are outside the human spectrum. That means the intense wavelengths that will surround you will block out any visible light. So the first pica-second of a 1-5mt detonation will make things pitch-black - just a moment before things get very very bright. So the upshot is - the lights will go out - just before 'your' lights go out.

The Cold War can be summed up in three words: -War is Hell. -
- The Soviets brutally crack down on dissent in the Eastern bloc and foment revolutionary movements wherever they can to weaken the U. S. geopolitically? WAR IS HELL.
- The Americans wipe out democratically-elected governments in their backyard and send troops all over the world to stop the spread of communism? WAR IS HELL.
We look at these evens now through the lens of hindsight and can see just how morbidly bad the conflict really was. But as John Green once said so poetically, it ain't paranoia if the other side really IS out to get you.

I'm curious who these courses are designed for? I always return time and time again to crash course like an ex lover who has learnt nothing and then regret it because I realise 15 minutes later I have learn nothing. I'm dyslexic and I find that the information/terminology is being thrown at me too quickly. I feel like I am doggy paddling through a maelstrom whenever I watch these videos. If they are not for people who struggled to learn at school, because of things like dyslexia ect. then who are they for?

A lot of people are indirectly, and sometimes outright, accusing John of American-centrism. But while European politics were important during this period, it-s important to realize that the two major players in the Cold War were America and the USSR, and it was their actions that dictated the outcome of most engagements and this era as a whole. To not focus on America, would essentially prevent John from giving complete context to the the Cold War.

This straight up isn't European history. Of course it makes sense to talk about US actions here, since they affected Europe so much, but there's no reason at all to talk about America's domestic affairs. Especially when they took up so much of the video. It's as if you've forgotten what series you're doing.

Seen various comments below indicating what you could have included. But this crash course has provided me more info than the entire lesson I had in my 8th grade. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to support on patreon
The coolest takeaway though was James Bond Vs Max Otto; )

-Us did fewer executions- If you only count americans yes, but in latin america US supported economically and militarily dictactorships that did huge purges killing thousands, anyone that was remotely interested in helping poor was either killed, tortured or forced to exile.

Is The Cold War a European thing? I know Great Britain was against Communism, and I'd imagine de Gaulle would be too (he is a Conservative Party guy, I believe, he probably is basically a French Republican. Italy, I don't know.

It-s so sad to see all of our former allies give up on us because of Donald Trump and his shenanigans. NATO used to be one of the biggest geopolitical alliances ever but Donald Trump trashes it every week via twitter.

It's an atrocity that you didn't talk about the redrawing of borders by the allies (mostly in the east) and the massive campaigns of ethnic cleansing and millions of refugees that such action unleashed.
