Videos like this makes me want to take sleeper train around in Europe! I-m loosely planning to take the sleeper train in Sweden from Gothenburg to Kiruna once this pandemic crap has gotten to a point where it-s safe to travel again, I grew up traveling a fair bit in the north and my soul is just longing for the north, but my nowadays disabled self can-t cope with long car rides any longer (used to go north by car and caravan) and you just don-t see much from an airplane, and I can-t sit for very long at a time so sleeper train would be the best of many worlds in a sense. I-ve only been on a sleeper train once (or well, twice as it was two ways) and that was in China between Suzhou in Jiangsu province, and Beijing. I was traveling first class with my ex husband and former in-laws as my former father in law needed to go to Beijing for some business stuff, and as my ex husband and I were in China at the time on vacation, it became a family trip so I could get to see Beijing too. I liked the experience of going by sleeper train, but had some difficulties sleeping on the way to Beijing as it was my first time ever being on a sleeper train and it was so much sounds and the movements of the train that I just wasn-t used to while laying in a bed (upper bunk in a 4 bed -room- in first class) and I was so curious to see things we passed by as well. On the way back from Beijing I slept like a rock though, exhausted from the days in Beijing and more used to the train too so it was easier to relax. Not sure about services on the sleeper train in China, if there-s cafe on board or so as we brought snacks and drinks ourselves to sustain us to our destination, no en suite toilet (think there may have been a sink though) but close to a common toilet and it wasn-t even a squat toilet. Overall it was a pleasant experience and most definitely made me want to try more sleeper trains

I love the old trains more. They had more atmosphere. From Vienna to Balkan, 24h train rides. Smoking next to the room. The normal (not sleep) trains were also much better. Like in Harry potter. That was atmosphere. Today they are way to sterile. But the look of the new trains gives hope for a cooler ride.

16: 33 They probably do appreciate a tip, however it's extremly unusual/weird to tip, when you didn't buy anything anyways here in (western) Europe. If you pay something it's pretty normal however absolutely not expected to pay a bit more as a tip. (No 20% needed, any tip will be appreciated)

Great video! Could I just ask please, did you book the entire room for yourself? There were 2 beds & I was just wondering, if you wanted privacy (the room just for yourself, you'd need to pay double. Thank You for such a wonderful series of journeys -

One blogger complained the deluxe windows were dirty, the trains lost power (no lights, and neither shower nor toilet worked. I hope OBB stays on top of complaints because I'll be riding NightJet from Berlin to Zurich once virus restrictions are lifted.

Beautiful journey. Here in India night trains are the way to go though it does not have such luxury as so many people needs to be accommodated. I have traveled couple of times by city night line from Germany to Zurich. It was good fun.

I did this trip in the opposite direction but in a normal train. It was the longest train trip I did so far, 11 hours if I remember correctly, since my final stop was Basel and the train stopped one hour because of the police.

I really love this CNL Coaches. I used to travel with them in Delux Cabins (upper Deck) to Freiburg (Breisgau) when the CNL still existed. I would love to travel in one of them once again.
reply

Trivia (that probably won't be read): CNL at one point presented a mock-up for a bilevel sleeper control car. They never built one though. It does live on as a scale model.

Me, a german watching the video without really reading the captions: Oh, an old DB Train.
The CNL Trains were/are iconic and they just have the typical DB look: D

Not all passengers want amenity kit. I chose not to take amenity. I am with my pen and socks. I think it could be luxury without default amenity.
