How to Replace a Hybrid Battery in a Prius (Upgraded Battery) milk-it: Exceptional work, as always, Chris! You and Jamie of Jamie's Garage have the attention to detail of a Swiss watch maker. One thing I would like to say, is that it is important to note, that Toyota did not lock out the replacement of the battery with a third party battery with its firmware in this instance. Certain companies, such as Apple, Samsung and John Deere, have made it nearly impossible to fix their latest products by locking out replacement parts - regardless whether they're OEM or not - with serialized components. Let's hope Right to Repair gains traction in all jurisdictions, so people can choose to fix and own the product they paid for. BTW: kudos on using your hands instead of an impact driver to undo and tighten all those nuts!

Really great, straight-to-the-point content. I hate it when I try to learn from an auto-mechanics video, and it's some old fool blabbering about his useless opinions for 90% of the video.
I have a few questions.
How does changing the battery have anything to do with the engine kicking on start-up? Is it because of one of the MG sets starting the engine, or something like that?
I have a 2011 Prius (around 115K miles) that gets about 45 on the highway, but around 36 in the city. Is this a good chance the battery is going bad? I never got an indication, but an OBDII device I plugged in said about 2 cells have a higher internal resistance than the other cells.
Great video. I can't wait to watch more.

Could have used Dr Prius to actually physically see the voltage on the cells and I didn't get far enough in this yet to see if he's replacing it with a lithium ion battery pack if not why would you not use project lithiums lithium ion battery pack legitimate question I own a few of these cars I bought one with a bad battery rebuilt the battery myself.
In no way shape or form an expert but kind of seems like there's quite a few things we could have done Dr Prius I believe is free and the lithium ion upgraded from project lithium is roughly 2, 200 bucks

Fantastic job, I can't imagine I'll ever need to do this but it was a great production overall. Love watching these videos, the professionalism, attention to details, and sticking to not using power tools just to show it ain't impossible.
My only minuscule and meaningless observation is that ChrisFix didn't remove the tape from the battery cover that he pointed on disassembly. Maybe it is something to fish for comments (it would've then worked haha) or no one would care, but anyway haha

34: 02 Isn't there a bolt missing on the left side of the raised area located in the top left of the battery electronic box? Probably form the last guy who worked on it. I don't own a hybrid but couldn't stop from watching the entire vid. Really interesting seeing the guts of a Prius battery! Keep'em coming Chris!
btw, knowing me, I would have forgotten about the safety plug at the end and remember it only when I try to start the vehicle after the interior install. lol

Dam you got me considering getting a used Prius, but I definitely do wanna finish fixing my car 2000 Toyota Corolla up for a road trip to go with my partner.
Just now need new suspensions and drum brakes along with bleeding out brake fluid as well.
Honestly thank you ChrisFix for inspiring me to do my own work to my to save more money as a college student and new adventures for the future.

3: 55 removing the safety lock does not make the battery safe to work on. It is still dangerous as it is 200 VDC which is way more risky to touch at the wrong place than 200 VAC. The safety lock just isolates the HV battery from the system completely. Some procedures on the car requires to do so just to be sure. If the car is turned off 3 relays are switching the HV battery of the main system.

Okay so first of all well done i like this video. Secondly as a toyota tech you are doing a lot of good things but id like to say that yes genuine batteries are expensive but at my location we have a battery buy back that you get 2000 off the price. And i recently did a bettery on one of these it blew a cell thanks to that filter being blocked plus the car had been filled with clothing.

I love your videos but idk it feels like your running out of content n just kinda repeating your old videos. And I still waiting for that video of u installing that new throttle body on the mustang. after u installed the Air intake. I'm not downing you or anything so don't take it like that. still love your videos and they still help a lot of people. But keep up the amazing work

I would like to nominate this video for the most interesting you've made. We need more on electric vehicles.
Being an electrician, I might be biased.
I do prefer pure electric and my favourite so far is the Polestar with Tesla second purely because of driver controls. They both make a V8 look like a Morris Minor.

As always, great methodical repair video. I have a question. I checked into a lithium battery pack replacement from Nexcell for my 2010 Prius. Lithium batteries are much lighter and pack a lot more power than NiMH. What do you think about replacing with the lithium packs? So far, my battery is fine. I get over 45 mpg.

Can I just ask. How do you record your voice! The quality is on par with a seperate voice over recording (which seems likely the case) but would require crazy editing to sync everything because the timing of your physical actions and voice make it seem like a live recording. AWESOME WORK!

I had a hybrid Mazda 3, (it had a prius electric drive train, after watching this I am very happy I sold that car because even the 3rd party battery is too expensive for me. I keep my cars going with junk yard donor parts. 20 to 50 bucks is my love language and prices I love to hear.

Nice and helpful!
A small detail that triggered me: voltage doesn't run through wires. That's current you're talking about.
90 pounds? Ouch. Need to have some extra strength (or a young body) to lift something that weight that way. Or you'll ruin your back.

Your last prius hybrid replacement gave me to confidence to buy my 09 civic hybrid. It had a blown head gasket and failing battery. Fixed the head gasket and battery myself. All in for under 4k. Its worth 9 but I'm keeping it long term. Thanks Chris!
