Hii Chris,
I need your advice. i just bought a new Varta F19 car battery online (autobatterienbilliger. de) for my Diesel 2 year old car - Toyota Avensis III Station Wagon (T27) 2. 0 D-4D.
it has being only over 2 months (i didn't installed it into car until 1 month ago.
everyday when before going to work, i noticed on my cigaratte hole volt meter indicating the voltage of the battery at the car key on is 11. 6v (for a few seconds when key first turn on),
then it stays at 11. 8v as long as the key remain on (not yet crank start.
after crank up, it is 14v.
the battery is brand new and i fully charged it before i install into the car. initially the voltage is 12v when the key first inserted and turned on.
after few weeks, i noticed it becomes 11. 9v, now 11. 8v. it stables at 11. 8v after the initial diesel heat (which causes the voltage to drop to 11. 6v.
i heard 11. 8v is already 80% discharged or more, of the battery?
during week days, i make short trip to work, but during week end, i did made 49mins drive on highway. why it didn't fully charged the battery to over 12v as when i first installed the car battery (after charging at home )?
right now is winter (2 -6 deg C day time, sometime -2C at night ), i know battery not accepting so much charge during cold weather, but a brand new battery of expensive brand behave like this is ridiculous. if i don't pay attention to it, it might goes over 50% discharge and ruin the battery. my car alternator is good. when the car running, it is mostly 14. 2 volt as show on cigaratte volt meter.
i also notice, when i turned the key on again after a short trip, the key on voltage is 12. 2v.
but over night (2nd day morning going to work, the key on voltage is again at 11. 8v ( and initial diesel heat voltage is 11. 6v.
so, what's the deal here?
do i have a bad battery or the vendor sold me old battery?
your advice will be very much appreciated.
thanks

Very helpful video. Having just changed the battery on my '95 just now, I would make one suggestion: If you can - because I'm not sure how long the positive cable is -- connect the positive (red) terminal before you get the battery all the way in. It was a real pain trying to get my fingers or a quarter-inch ratchet in there to attach the terminal after I had the battery in and clamped down. I ended up using an 8mm open end wrench on it.

Hi Chris. I got a new battery for my 94 C4 and when I go to put the side panel back on, the panel hits the plastic bracket that the strap goes through and cannot seat properly. I thought perhaps I needed a battery without a strap, and therefore without those brackets, such that the battery is not as wide. However I cannot find any without those brackets so I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas? Thanks

Damn I wish my C3 had the battery under the hood! When my dad and I first bought her, the shop we too her too actually told us the behind the seat batteries were a pain in the neck, compound this with the fact that the seat frame is busted/rusted so it doesn't like to move and I'm surprised they even managed to replace the battery

Hi Chris, thanks for all you do. I've gotten many insights from your videos. I was wondering if you could direct me to the store you got your battery from. I also have a C4 and it needs a battery. I see that it's a Duracell. The ones I'm seeing are over 100. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

I've been a shade tree mechanic for some years and just bought a c4. This video popped up in my feed and I thought pssh why would I watch a battery replacement video. Wow I am glad I did, I didn't think the fender panel was removed so easily. Thanks!

You can not put an Opti battery or any battery that has optional post on the top. I have a 94 c4 there is a brace up in the battery compartment that will touch the positive post. This is the experience I had.

If you take off the battery hold down first. You can slide the battery out a little while the positive cable is still attached to make it easier to access take it off. And just do the reverse to reinstall.

Red Ryder II Clear and direct--nice job. Tried Sears, their tech didn't know squat, wouldn't touch it. Will buy take-out battery and do it myself. Really neat that you described all the tools needed,
