The pains of dealing with part suppliers! Years ago a shop owner told me it's best to take the part you need to the part guy to match up parts. He also said to not let go of the one you have or it will get lost at some point before the parts are located. I know it's difficult to make that happen as a single mechanic shop but there are times when it has to happen, such as the water pump/gasket cluster. Also, I know that six or Eight point bolts will live through the extreme heat generated at the exhaust flange. We had to use them for our headers all the time when unbolting the exhaust system from time to time. Maybe the salvage yard will give some credit toward the oil pan damage since they didn't disclose they will be selling you that engine with a bad one. Maybe not a credit worth the entire cost to replace it but a lower price on the motor to keep all fair. Lots of fun there, I hope the A/C compressor is still good. Hate to send her down the road with one that's bad especially since the system had no refrigerant in it.
Yes, those chain auto parts stores are a real PITA. They do not ever have long term experienced counter people. In addition, they tend to have to order parts all the time as they are not in stock. We have an old school privately owned ma & pa traditional auto parts store in town and they get warehouse deliveries twice a day so if they have to order a part for you, it's there by 1 PM or by 4 PM that same day. In addition, the counter folks all know more about things than most other places do and it helps them as much as it does the customer. They get all of our business because of their great service.

I worked in auto parts and learned the hard way by looking up parts in catalogs before everything was on computer, they were just starting to put the catalogs on microfilm and computer in the early nineties when I worked but the store I worked in never modernized, the owner was Korean and died when he fell off a ladder while cleaning the gutters on his house, he refused when a larger store wanted to take over and modernize so he died without a penny to his name, the geniuses that work in advance or AutoZone wouldn't know how to use those old catalogs especially when you had to cross reference it was a pain the one warehouse we delt with was really good at helping out again the old fashioned way.

O'Reilly messed me up the other day when I went in there and asked to borrow a tool to pull a CV axle from a 1998 Chevy Prizm. They suggested a claw tool with a slide hammer. The claws were too short, so I returned to the store to swap it out for something longer. They gave me the longest one they had, but it was not compatible with the slide hammer they lent me earlier. I was pissed that I had 3 tools and all of them were useless. I ended up using a pair of vice grip tongs, two C-clamps and a hammer. I was so pissed, it came out after a couple of very hard hits. Not to mention I bought an axle shaft seal that was too small lol. But we didn't give up and got it done right.

One better than Advance Auto. Pep boys. I was in there store looking for a few items. No store associate to be found no where. I look in the back literally 5 guys standing around a computer. I yell out HELLO. One of those 5 guys say something and I tell them I have a question. There response We work with commercial accounts, not in store customers.
I turned around and left. Can't get help at all in that store, but they have 5 guys with their thumb up their butt for commercial accounts.

people really asked why u don't polish all the parts. i think their watching too much tuner TV. time is money and that's alot of hours which is amounts to cost for a daily driver tobe driven on salt infested roads. leave that polishing for Florida in the good weather they can spend the money on serving their vehicle more frequently keeps the insides nice and shiny which is wat really matters

My favorite story with parts at Advanced - not a sponsor - is getting parts for my 2005 Legacy. Young man at the counter, obviously new.
Counter man: Can I help you?
Me: I hope so. I need set of front rotors and brake pads for a 2005 Legacy Sedan.
Counter man: Um, who makes a Legacy?
Me: Ferrari
Counter man: Wow! I don't think we carry that.

I'm watching this in 2020 home because of Covid-19 & this is just what I needed as I was getting depressed! I've never laughed so hard in my life! I hope you keep up the rant as it seems that most part's store still doesn't get it. Why should I pay more my local store when I can get it cheaper online & delivered to my front door.

5: 00 why dont you have a few rolls of different thickness gasket material in your shop for emergencies like this one? I always make sure that I have some on hand. it sucks taking time to cut out a semi complicated gasket like the one you need but at least you wouldnt be waiting 30 more hrs.

Thanks for the rant about Advance. That was quite enjoyable to listen to. I worked there 15 years. Gave my all and got thrown out like yesterdays garbage when i got hurt at work. I was the only one in my store who is ASE certified and had been for 10 years
