Switching your eating times because lunch is cheaper, cooking your self instead of really enjoying the local cuisine while on vacation? Man I thought I was cheap!
To me enjoying the local cuisine is at least half the experience. I'm not going to save on that.
Your advice not staying outside the city center is a good one.
Your advice booking trains early is not. What if you have never been to Europe and you don't know what you like yet. Would be a waste having to stay at a boring place just because you have a train booked for tomorrow.

I haven't been to Europe but am planning a trip for fall. One of the things that I have told friends travelling is to pick up a post card from each place you visit. Write you experiences on the card and mail it to yourself at home. When you get home you have a beautiful chronicle of your trip that is easy to make into a scrapbook. You have the added advantage of having postage from each area. Just a thought to save on souvenirs.

One tip I have: create your own connections for flights. Example: Charlotte to Kiev is about $950. Charlotte to NY can be as low as $85 and then to Kiev about $500-600. You've just saved a few hundred dollars. I wish I had also know that I could fly directly to Kharkiv from NY for about $500, compared to Charlotte to Kharkiv for about $2500+ (which is why I flew to Kiev first and then had to go by train from Kiev to Kharkiv.

City passes can destroy your budget unless you research them in advance. You probably won't get to everywhere on them, you need to allow for days being tired, and you need to see if you've got a day trip or special event on a consecutive days pass. They're not always bad, but it's easy to get muesemed out and just want to have a pint of beer or a coffee rather than one more sight

For Eurorail, even if it is a good value, keep in mind that seat reservations are usually NOT included, so you have to book those separately. I'm going to 9 countries this summer, Ireland to Hungary, all by train, and Eurorail was almost 2x the price as just buying the tickets (and seat reservations where available) separately.

probably a realllyy dumb question, but say I save up a lot of American dollars to travel the world, is there a way to convert the money into euros or whatever? because obviously you can't spend American dollars in different countries. would I just have to save up money in another country?

Yes! We always eat breakfast at our hotel, eat a late lunch at about 2/3 o'clock, and snack at 6: 00-ish, then to bed early because we're so tired! One nice meal out in the evening is all we'll do to experience the culture. Picnic-ing is the best!

I can't find an answer to my question anywhere: how do you pay for something when you can't speak the language? Even if the cashier writes it down for you, it will be written in foreign text. So how do you know how much to give them?

I usually travel in sleeper cars. And don't bother spending money on eating out. Go explore a European grocery store, like Tesco. You might find cool ways to make your own lunches or dinners.

I always compare city passes and museum passes before I leave. Some have to be bought before you depart and some aren't that good of a deal but doing research in advance can save you a lot.
