we'll first understand the basic concepts of blend modes working in out favor in removing the background. Then, we'll learn how to actually change or replace the background automatically by using those blend modes and then refine the selections. Once the new background and the subject are in place, we will adjust the lighting and the colors to match both the elements. Lastly, we are going to learn some cool cross processing/color grading tricks by utilizing one of the most underutilized adjustment layers in a creative fashion

I'm sorry but the edges on these examples look terrible and show why you can't skip making difficult selections. You're better off carefully selecting and masking out the model from the beginning so then you can drop her onto whatever background you want, wispy hair and all, with less fuss, fewer layers and not all this Hard Light blending nonsense. The time spent fussing with this tutorial's technique would be better spent learning how to mask well, something Unmesh does teach effectively in his other videos. Skip this and go to those.

These are great tutorials. The only thing I might add would be keyboard commands as a lower third. I like how you stop and explain basic things like brush size / opacity IN CONTEXT because those are the questions I've had as I've been learning in my career. It's also nice in that you have good taste and good design sense. Nothing worse than learning from someone who teaches well but makes images that are not aspirational. Good teacher + good image maker = better tutorials. Thanks for posting this.

Unmish! I've started working with this method and I have a question. The difference is that my subjects are on a neutral gray background that's considerably lighter than the backdrop I need to composite into. Should I use a different approach or blend technique? I'm still experimenting, but I'm not as satisfied with the result on a darker background.
Thanks so much for your videos! There amazing.
Peace,
Allen

ok what if i already have the wooden background like in the example here and i want to make it green? is this technique applies? the wooden background have a grey hues already or should i reverse putting the grey layer on top of it to get the same effect like this photo?
reply

How would you do this with a shadow gradient on a white background? Same as what you have here but if shot on a white backdrop. I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the shadow cast onto the wood background. Would be awesome to see an explanation for this. :)

This Tutorial is amazing. All of your tutorials are amazing. I stopped watching other ones. Your steps are always simple, the pace of the Videos is good - not too much talking and not too slow.

This is great but is there a way of changing the background of particularly hairy dogs. Even if i shoot with a grey background its still an awful/impossible job to paint it out round the hairs?

HELP! At 8: 33 I try to paint and it won't let me. Pop up says could not use the history brush because the history state does not contain a corresponding layer. What am I doing wrong?
reply

10: 11 if you press one time, and after you press shift and press it on another place, your brush will paint direct line. Very useful when you need to draw a straight line in masks.

I have followed step by step to change background for practicing, but still have difficulties to brush fill in layer, it just does not work, I'll try again

Hi can you tell me how to edit videos in photoshop after effects, complete step by step process and also if we need to install any plug in
reply

It seems at 0: 44 you mentioned Opacity instead of Overlay. (Just a gentle correction. Always waiting for video from the great teacher.

Hello Unmesh. Thanks for this video but in case we wish to change the background of an image which is not gray, how are we gonna do?
reply

I'm surprised you don't use the quick selection tool over the brush more. Helps for making some very precise edges on masks.

It doesn't matter how old could be this video, I keep learning from you. Probably one of the best explaining things
