i have win 8.1 64bit and i did not have to do any of this. all i did was i went to the install program and right clicked it and picked properties. i set the compatibility mode of windows 95 then i ran the install program in admin mode. after install i went to directory of dos game and found program to run game. i set it to win95 compatibility and run as admin. the i right clicked on it again and picked create a shortcut then copied shortcut to my desktop. closed everything then i ran the shortcut and the game ran with no problems at all. so far i installed 10 dos games this way and they all worked. they all were sierra games like kings quest, quest for glory etc. i even did this to all the zork games and they worked as well. i did not use dos-box or even installed it. try doing a dos game this way and see if it works for you.

Sorry to say ... DOSBOX does not work on WINDOWS 8.1 64bit.
In the DOS command screen it is not possible to enter the backslash -\- when trying to MOUNT a drive then identify the path for the selected drive.
Also not possible to enter the c:\filename.
Even the ASCII code for the keystroke does not work.
Pity.
