A First Look at Elementary OS 6.0 -Odin- DistroTube quick look at the recently released Elementary OS 6.0 Odin. Elementary is an Ubuntu-based Linux distro that has its own desktop environment and its own custom applications. It is very Mac-like in its walled garden approach to how a desktop should look and function. - https://elementary.io/

I don't actually think EOS6 is a distro for basic or for new users. The almost empty software center shows that what the development team is actually trying to do, is to create a new platform with apps that are actually created with EOS in mind. If you want to access ubuntu repositories you need to use the terminal or to install gnome-software from ubuntu repositories. The same goes for the Desktop Environment. EOS6 developers are not just giving you an option to enlarge your customisation possibilities. They strive to give you a specific experience that you can embrace or refuse, but they don't actually want you to have your own customised theme. They are basically doing like the GNOME team does: they give you what they think it is the best and they don't care about your opinion or your possibly different taste. It's not to me something to suggest to new or basic users. EOS is for those that want a different take on the linux desktop and that are willing to change their workflow to get a cohesive and polished experience on linux.

I just installed Elementary Odin on one of my laptops replacing the previous version. I agree that the App store is a huge disappointment , but there is nothing I really need that I cannot install through the flat-pack store or Terminal from other sources. I use ZORIN and POP OS as my main .. but I will keep elementary on that particular laptop to see if they tweak it over the next few months. I have one issue that I will bet you will have some input on , The ODIN version absolutely refuses to install Elementary Tweaks.. I had to install Pantheon Tweaks instead which is similar but not as many options as The previous. -This seems to be an ongoing theme for this new distro-
I love your views on the new Distro, As usual it is very concise, well presented and informative . Thanks for your videos..I luv em!

Used to all reboot, halt, poweroff, etc. commands had to be done with root...it was just the way Linux did things. Then with the advent of Ubuntu/Mint all normal users were allowed to do this. This convenience, though not the standard Linux way, became the norm. Elementary is just doing it how it used to be done. This can be changed many ways. You can add users to the sudoers file or you can add users to an adm group and give those users the setuid/setgid bit (not recommended for systems that use systemd). If you just RTFM, man shutdown shows there is -a option for non-root usage: If shutdown is called with the -a argument (add this to the invocation of shutdown in /etc/inittab), it checks to see if the file /etc/shutdown.allow is present and allows users in that file to invoke reboot, halt or poweroff procedures

What do you think about hidpi display? I'm moved on one couple days ago and very disappointed of state of support on linux. I'm mostly windows user and linux using Linux usually in VM or remotely with ssh.. monitor 27 44, text is super sharp, I'm using 125-150% scaling and on win 10 it's.. okay, in manjaro with kde and kde/qt apps,brave/many other apps also okay, in cinnamon (big fan of thos) first thing is incredible blurry fonts on file manager, a little blurry on settings app... it's absolutely unusable.
About elementary os.. Hidpim support is terrific, only 1x, 2x and 3x options available.. not mention that with 2x all elements are huge, they don't show property, really it's fully broken, for example, only small part of desktop content menu are visible )))

I am an advanced user. (40 years working in IT) I have used Elementary almost exclusively for quite a few years, I have an IOT dev platform with Ubuntu and a streaming platform made with Manjaro but all of my day-to-day computing needs are met by EOS. I have had very few problems with it. I have also installed it for clients with about 50 workstations all running EOS. It is easy to teach people how to use it and they are usually 90% up and running within a day. I barely get any support calls regarding its use and the reliability has been remarked upon by the clients.

It's to bad about the limited options in the app store. I don't think even a casual computer user would like the limited selection. I can imagine installing this on a parents system and them calling and asking how to install a program they read about. The nightmare of trying to walk them through installing something as simple a Gimp for example. I think I would install Zorin instead on a casual users system like a parent's pc. Something that has very good odds of having the programs they want one click away in the application store.

-The App Store... It's broken, it's broken!- No. It isn't broken. It was designed that way for security and assurance of operation. Perhaps you should actually read up on something before trying to show your -expertise.- As others have pointed out, you can add other repositories at your discretion. Having -choices- it is a wonderful thing. As for other software creators not implementing Elementary OS' -dark Mode-... how is that Elementary OS' fault? Give everyone some time to catch up.

Hi guys, I'm pretty new to Linux and am looking for a distro that can perform just as well as Puppy Linux on old hardware but looks much more modern. I want to install it on a USB drive and because of this I need it to load fully in Ram so it's fast enough and at the end of the session if i installed a new app I want to save these changes on the USB drive before shutting down. What distros would you recommend that fulfills what i described above?Thank you!

The desktop is locked down by default. Workaround is to replace the Pantheon Files manager with Nemo, add Nemo & to startup, logout and login. You can then add desktop icons, files and folders to the desktop. Elementary OS is minimalistic so you have to make changes to make it an os power users can feel at home in. Pantheon Tweaks lets you change buttons, icons and cursors on the fly.

You need to enable repositories: sudo apt-get install software-properties-common, then run sudo apt-get update. Nothing-s broken; just the Ubuntu repositories aren-t turned on by default and you set it up to also add third party repositories like for Pantheon Tweaks. Then you can install Synaptic Package Manager to search for the usual software you find on other Ubuntu derivatives.
