I've been forced to install windows and Respondus for my exams. I managed to run it into a VM for a while, you just needed to change a bit of the binary in order to bypass the VM check, but then they forced an update that hardened the whole thing with a checksum and probably other stuff. What a terrible experience, the sad thing is that almost none of my colleagues at university think this is an issue

I am really glad that my university doesn't use stuff like that (especially after hearing about proctorU and that respondus), we have either exams in presence (if regulations can be kept) or exams that are designed to be worked on at home (essay like)
I personally think that they did a pretty good job with that system, after all they don't need to force software on students, with that system

ESR's comments make no sense when you look at what they're really doing. Edge is 90% chromium based. It's not like releasing a linux edition is hard. Code is Electron based. Making it for windows means making it for linux, basically. And Proton? Really? Proton is run by Valve. I can't imagine a former Microsoft employee (Gabe Newall) just shifting control over to Microsoft from Valve.

Love your show. Freedom never comes for free. Breaking 'rules' or 'laws' in order to be free is always allowed by my standaards, especially when you set others free as well. I endorse the message on the cars license plates of the state New Hampshire which state for many many years: -live free or die-.

If piracy is immoral, and DRM is immoral, one need not choose between the lesser of two evils. Instead, there is a third way: we can drop our sense of entitlement (I am including myself in this entitled -we-) and go watch/read something else that hasn't been crippled by DRM.

The companies who make things like ProctorU or Respondus should be banned. The developers who made them shouldn't be allowed to develop anymore. The companies' entire assets should be seized and donated to projects of the Free Software Foundation. lol!!

These persons aren't educated, it seems they can't draw the parallel between rights they fight for on a daily basis and their numerical equivalents, once it's related to tech law doesn't exist anymore. Staline would have loved to live in this area !!

Respondus would get blasted in the UK for raising safeguarding issues, and probably violating the Data Protection Act. Pro-tip: Spyware is still bad, even if your lecturer tells you to install it.

I don't know about that, but I believe that Windows will eventually become a subscription service/streaming, just like Apple is slowly moving to iPads being the laptop replacement for most people.

Btw, the professors at universities aren't the ones making the decision to have students install bad software, that's the administration... (faculty and admins don't always see eye to eye...).
