Ok so the reason that the PCIe interface add on board was metal was rigidity. On a traditional GPU the PCB adds to the rigidity of the entire card, remember there is alot of weight when it comes to the cooler, that needs to be supported, with a wide spread of a traditional PCB that would help spread the load. This card, however, has a very small PCIe interface board, if it was simply PCB, it would simply snap being placed in a traditional case, that cooler has some serious girth to it. the only way you could possibly use a PCB as the PCIe interface is if it was 100% going to be placed in a vertical mount, but that can't been 100% guaranteed.

Serious question here.
For stuff like this and say dev consoles, engineering samples, and other reproduction/prototype equipment.
What's stopping Nvidia, Sony, Intel, etc. from calling the police and saying X person is in possession of stolen goods I assume this card was never supposed to leave Nvidia/partner. And especially dev consoles which are 100% loaned to devs and returned when done.
Is it just a public perception thing Like of course, everyone would hate Nvidia for getting GN raided by the police. But from a legal standpoint is there anything stopping them from doing it

think that prototype shows the basic idea to move pcb orientation to allow more airflow. this basic idea is transferred to 50 series of FE cards as well, while the custom cards still have a classic flat horizontal pcb, what explains why these coolers need the lenght.
But as we have seen that prototype cooler is by far to complex and its manufacturing including that pcb layout feels very expensive. it shows what’s physically possible, not what’s economical to produce in mass.
very interesting video and thanks for the work.

Gamers Nexus. Ready see Western America burn because of Nvidia's literal bombs that are their gpus Nvidia is in California and they have not gave warnings at all of the worst weather conditions int the West the past few years.
They are clearly a monopoly. Apple gives more warnings about the Wests weather conditions with Intel and AMD and Microsoft, but Nvidia, being the monopoly of gaming that they still are, are not warning anyone about the destruction that will spark in Silicon Valley and Silicon Forest!

Gamers Nexus, be very careful. Nvidia's are creating RTX 50 series to be too powerful for any power supply that is below its recommendation. Think of how much damage and the cost for PCs to blow up because of the power supply not being exactly what Nvidia is recommending. Do you like my jacket
He sounds like he can dictate how people can really spend their money. And RTX 4090 was just the start of it. We need to not allow danger to spread within people's homes and into their personal lives.

I actually think this is a prototype for a 50 series cooler. There's a couple of reasons I say that.
The biggest one is that with the new 50 series, it uses this cooler design. The 5090 uses a two-slot solution with this flow-through design.
So I would bet that when they were designing and testing this new cooler, they simply didn't have 50 series GPU dies ready yet to test it with. So they used a 4090 die instead, which is what you have on this prototype.

Amazing how the most interesting GPU video in the new generation news cycle is about a test bed for an abandoned project from the last generation... When you get the actual 50XX cards, could you do a video comparing this GPU's cooler and PCB design to that of the 50XX FE production models It would be interesting to see what lessons they carried through into the design we see over there.

This is insane thermal engineering, But would be extremely expensive to make for the consumer market. But I can see its influence in the new 50 series full pass through design with the extraordinarily dense gpu board. They would have tested this mule for getting stability data of the card in all performance ranges. The new 50series have defenitely gained from this prototype.

I think i heard that the 40series should have been made by samsung at some point, bevore they chose tsmc, and samsung had a way less inefficient node than tsmc. Thus a samsung made 4090 would have produced way more heat, what could have been the reason for such a big cooler Maybe they then switched to tsmc and the cooler wasnt needed anymore
Thx steve

Hey Steve! Off topic comment, but I posted something in the GamersNexus Reddit regarding a very concerning issue that occurs because of Razer’s program Synapse’. The post is titled, Razer Synapse is Evil I think there is some information that should be dug up on this issue that myself and several others have dealt with. Much love Steve

I'm looking forward to the Malcom interview. Regardless of how I view Nvidia as a whole, Malcom clearly loves the work he does and Nvidia deserves some credit for letting him talk directly to you guys. I desperately hope they don't stonewall information about this prototype, because there's no doubt Malcom would have a ton to say about it.

I'm setting here watching this and all I can think is MOVE!
Don't you have anyone with mechanical engineering experience... It's like watching a monkey (radio edit) a football. You know you shouldn't watch, but just can't turn away.
Thank you for the VOD. Very entertaining. LoL

I can hear all of heavens above and below shouting at my screen You have literally dealt with this exact problem with hidden screws before! On the same manufacturer!! W.T.F.!!!
Thank you Patrick, I've almost unsubbed for this one... I hope _Steve_ didn't do that piece on purpose.

Every time I've seen this image I've assumed it's a 4090 prototype on the basis that the GEFORCE RTX text is in the older font and surely if it were a Ti it would be in the newer font. I don't know how reasonable an assumption that is But that's what my mind has always told me.

As someone who games with open back hifi headphones which do not block noise at all, this is how I wish more air cooled GPUs were like. 400 watts but almost inaudible (probably completely silent if you set the temperature target to something more sensible like 65-70C.)

The EVGA not a 4090, 4090 made me sad : ( ... I've only bought EVGA for like 15 years when it comes to GPU. What do I buy now Gigabyte MSI Zotac I honestly don't know bc I've never even bothered researching these companies bc the answer was always EVGA.

Question: Does anybody else have Nvidia driver issue where driver turns off ability to control fans and power on gpu I am stuck on driver from 2022 on my 2060 super because if i put new driver my fans just dont work at all and gpu overheats. Tf nvidia

I'd say the pcb thickness is less to do with heat, and more to do with the extremely dense layout. You need extra layers with blind vias to connect everything with less space. Reminds me of the boards you find in test equipment. Awesome prototype!

I still wonder why we never get a brand-new Titan RTX. I always look at it as a perfect bridge between GeForce and Quadro. If you're a business or enterprise userbase who owns Quadro GPU, you know how utterly expensive that thing is!

I'm not a nVidia fan at all but this is a really impressive design! Those temps look aio like.
Fornthe 5090/5080 they also have a very small pcb and a interesting compact flow trough design. Looking forward to the thermal tests of those.
