An exhausting couple of days framing the roof of the master bedroom addition. Before finishing the framing, I move the fireplace onto the concrete pad in order to determine the best framing configuration for the chimney chase. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. One thing I would have done differently: I can see where you left a little ledge around your chimney for the stone to sit on; You should have put a 2x4 (or even a 4x4) there around the inside of your form when you poured that slab-- so that your ledge for the stone would be lower than your actually slave level. This is the best way to make it water proof. The way you have it now, the water can run down the stone and then hit that slab and try to work it's way under the seal plate, etc. It's mostly under the overhang, so it's not a huge deal. But lowering that ledge around the outside, when you're pouring your slab is the best way to go (next time.

I've been watching from nearly day 1. Always love your work. But I'm wondering why the switch to purchased lumber & the more modern building style With such meticulous details in the main cabin build. it's almost disappointing to see this switch to the modern materials. Giving you all the respect in the world. getting older or wife's request for this to be done ASAP or just too busy. I do understand. But I do miss the slower & more natural building style of the main cabin.

Nice stuff, happy you are having a fireplace in your master, so, so Romantic =, question my friend: Birds mouth size, in general, it should be about 30 % from rafter width Many things, it depends: Pitch of the roof, Width/ length of rafters, but, I could be wrong, have been once or twice before: your birds mouth is like 50-60% of rafters width Any reason for that Just wondering, , you get tons of snow. in there, .keep it up, been watching last 5-6 years, youtheman! =)

Amazing isn’t adequate, but it’s a start. You always amaze me with your skills, and quality of workmanship. Your wife is a lucky lady to have someone who does it all, but I’m sure you are blessed to have her as well. The water feature took my breath, now this gorgeous fireplace. I know that rock work is going to be difficult, but my prayers are with you for safety and no glitches. My prayers and best wishes to all.

There's Shawn going like mad up and down ladders adding a large Master Bedroom with a fireplace. I was in his shape until my 66th Cycle. But to follow his content is most exciting, engaging, instructive and peaceful to a special degree and class. Who could ever have enough of Shaun James and his wife with Cali. This will be another great build. Thank you so very much Mr. James (Outdoorsman Extraordinaire. From Mississippi.

I and a lot of other people guessed right! You're installing a fireplace in the bedroom. Oh my goodness! It's going to be nice and cozy in there, once it's all finished. You are an amazing and productive man, Shawn James. I am SO glad that I have been watching your videos all these years and as long as you put them out, I will continue to watch you. Stay safe and healthy Shawn and your family, and of course Cali.

I am exited to watch all you last things, I love working wood, I have only one advice about the stairs, working with wood of 12 feet, 2 by 10 ruff are way more easy than those metallic floors, always heavy and hard to manipulate
It doesn't mean trow them but I would sell them and by nice wood
I build stairs every day for months every years
Thank you for your amazing content

Hello, how are you How interesting! I didn't know there was a pre-made fireplace! It was very interesting to me. You will have beautiful evenings with your wife in that beautiful room, drinking wine or hot coffee in front of the fireplace! Your faithful dog is there too. It will be great. The last frames had the sun shining very beautifully and it was very attractive.

make sure to put a lot of stone and bricl around the fireplace to make use of the thermal mass and heating system/ i would put literally 10 tons of rock on that thing and heat the entire crib with it. and in the winter it should met a 20ft dry circle around it for a warmer outdoor winter experince. the more mass the greather the radiation of hea

Very nice Shawn, I have watched you labor with historical methods since the beginning It is nice to see you agoopting the more modern tools now. You proved you could do it the old ways, now it is time to keep up the good dquality of what you do in a more modern way, it is a bit refreshing rather than agonizing while I watched you work.

I guess I dont' understand the point in building a log cabin if you're going to build everything else with normal construction. I'd rather do all one or all the other. Honestly, I'd probably just skip the logs. ; ) . that's a lot of work. I guess maybe if I cut them into half round beams on a band saw, it would be more appealing.

I am 77 yrs. old and truly enjoy watching you do the things I no longer can do. I watch for your new videos with the level of anticipation I have for a batch of brownies about to come out of the oven. I have followed you for years and will continue to watch your outstanding content for as long as the Lord gives me.

Groetjes Hans.

What a beautiful cozy fireplace it will be. I just knew with the concrete base and dirt fill it had to be for fire! I was thinking a woodstove, but a fireplace is even better, I'd never leave the room. I know you and your wife will love the bedroom addition.

Tall chimneys are better anyway they removed the smoke much better in certain types of weather. My son built a log house and their woodstove chimney is very high up because they have a high pitch and he never has any smoke issues in the house or around the house.

Coming along good. You need to watch yourself on the heavy lifting. My job required me to lift heavy things. I recently had surgery for an Inguinal Hernia that all the doctors said was from heavy lifting. And that happened almost 10 years after I retired.

I had a bet with myself that it would be for a fireplace. but i need more information about what this pre-made brick effect metal box is. Never seen an open fireplace unit. Interested in how it is insulted against fire as it appears a little flimsy.

I watch your videos all the time and I definitely enjoy them but while watching you build your new bedroom I noticed you didn’t use headers or jack studs at your door, window and fireplace openings, I’m a little curious as to why

Glad to see you using modern materials and tools. You work equally well in traditional and modern methods. You’ve nothing to prove to yourself. Now it’s get r done time. Best wishes for a safe and happy build. Thanks for sharing.
