Building a Root Cellar under my Log Cabin, Making Dinner for my Wife, Forest Garden Potato Harvest

With cold weather finally here, I prioritize harvesting the vegetable gardens, building shelves and installing lights and a fan in the root cellar under the cabin to store the vegetables and other food. On the wood stove, I light the first indoor fire of the season and cook my wife a beef stew. A really critical step in self-reliance is having a place to store the food that you grow in the garden. As a child my grandparents had a root cellar and it was quite a learning experience on not just piling up the potatoes, carrots, etc. but actually caring for them in order to have veggies for the long cold winter. I look forward to hearing and seeing your progress in this regard.

I think that DNA was a flaw in nature. It's not just meant to become more by it self! Rocks and sand isn't like that. We probably should make vegetables, as we make food. but DNA doesn't follow human logic. DNA has a very tiny secret code that will multiply. It is the coolest thing. Grass eaters know but then there are cheaters that eats the grass eaters instead so that is also DNA I suppose. Someone needs to understand all this.

Fantastic video. You had a great harvest. I always learn something each time I watch you. The shelving and storage are excellent. Cali looks a little older now. Seems like her puppy stage is over and she is such a beautiful dog. Nice to see you and your wife enjoying dinner. Everything you have is so nice because your work is excellent. Thanks for the video.

A small tip for veggie prep: flatten one side a metal bucket a bit, hang it off the side of the counter as a catch for the veggie waste.
My sink has one of those useless small side sinks, but I discovered a grocery bag fits in it perfectly. It clears working space on the counter from having a waste container. I fold down the handles and viola!

It's a shame as the bulk of the population has no clue today how to harvest even a small garden AND store the bounty in such a way that it will last thru the winter and until the earth produces food again. I'm so glad to see that there are some pockets of the population where this knowledge is retained and passed on. however imperfect it might be.

Ruth Stout method for potatoes has worked for me until i found out the straw i was using had been sprayed by the straw farmers with herbicides to kill weeds. It impacted my harvest last few years so i need to find organic straw source now I cant plant potatoes here in Florida as the fungus and critters eat them up.

I ve said it before, but I ll say it again. Your wife is a lucky woman. I imagine you would be comfortable living in your shed, but you are building all the comforts of home for her. You are also lucky to have her! She has stayed with you on your journey through thick and thin. Your marriage is truly blessed.

I saw a clip of some medical tv show last night.
Girl was about to die. Intubated.
Cause was pickles made in antique copper pot.
Vinegar and copper.
Idk if that's a real thing but I think it was copper poisoning.
Idk if wine or wine vinegar would do it.

Mice are an issue for me too. They nibbled all the radish tops. I tried adding boulder piles around my property to attract snakes. Also I keep the clutter to a minimum for mice to have places to hide and live in. It's helping a bit.

Okay you need a wagon for spring, summer, fall to take wood to the house and a sleigh for snow to take wood for your wife, daughters and you to save the back Shawn as once you hit your later yrs you will need them. LOL

Weird your wife does not participate in anything it appears, even showing up on camera if just on occasion. I want a mate that is my helper. Guess she s a city girl?
I love all you have done. Much to be admired.

Great video, I've been hoping to see how the cellar area was coming along. I love seeing how you plan things out, having a plan is more important in long term thinking then most people realize.

If you can get your hands on some bamboo, it can be good to put on your soil floor.
It will allow the cool air to permeate and reduce tracking dirt out.
_(check it for bugs first)_

A spoiled dog is a loved dog! Does your wife ever help you or do you do everything by yourself? Why do we never see her helping you? Does she live in town or there with you? Just curious.
