You remember when people use to drive their car on the lake to go ice fishing? And it took a long time to auger through the ice? Yeah that's the last time I was ice fishing lol. WAY too much water laying on top of that ice & it didn't take long for you to auger through the ice - I'm not that brave, LOL. , I always thought you built a fire & only cooked & ate what you cought - lol - didn't look like fidh to me. LOL. GREAT video Shawn - reminds me of some of the area around where I live. Always nice to have a fire to keep warm out there & food in case you don't catch anything. AND YOU are right about dressing warm. unfornuately, I can't wear wool - too itchy if over-heated even with something on underneath the wool. Does your wife go ice fishing too? One thing I can honestly say is that fresh fish tastes better than the fish they sell in the stores. Hope you caught some. Keep up the great video's!

Shawn, good advice for dressing appropriately for the cold. It's also very good that you mentioned about poor circulation in your legs and your feet freezing because your legs are bent. I learned the hard way it's not just that, it's also smoking. Smoking constricts your blood vessels in your extremities drastically and I ended up with 1st and 2nd degree frostbite on five toes because I was on a USAF airplane, flying back from Iceland, back in the day. The plane had no heat and I was required to wear dress blues with our thin, hard, leather Oxford shoes and I was smoking. Bad deal all the way around; now, for the rest of my life, I can get frostbite twice as fast and twice as bad on those toes.

Hi, I really enjoy watching your show, but I wanted to make a comment. Like many other people, as much as I enjoy living your life style, I'm not able to do that for many reasons. I think self reliance is when people rely on themselves for making a living and also contributing to the society. as much as you think or like you can not be entirely self reliant, for instance, you can not make all your clothing, or machinery, even you need to buy the flour to make your bread, and so on. may be we should use another term for your life style, it defiantly is not self reliance.

Man, been there 100 times here in Maine. Cold, slush, standing water, wind. all to catch a fish that 99% of the time we let go. Bait bucket freezes. Holes freeze over quickly and wind covers them with snow. Especially with that tiny ice auger hole (6 inch. Then the sled gets stuck or breaks down. Brrrrrr. No more of that for me. Too old and too comfortable to fight that battle anymore. Especially with death being a real possibility. Good for you, though! Keep up the fight!

Please dont take this wrong. I meditate and go to sleep by your videos. Now i do watch most sll of them clear thru. But the soothing sound of ur relaxed voice at times, your silence while you work with the sounds of your working, and the sounds of nature in the background relax me so very much. Thx. I think you do many things for many people in many ways!

Loved this video. brought back lots of memories from my childhood. Snowmobiling on the 200 acres around our farm in the middle of the city in central Canada. had not moved to Ontario yet. all I can say is thank you for the memories. keep up the great videos. oh yes by the way my favorite videos are you and Cali and your cooking ones.

Shaun, . Regarding keeping your feet warm when you are active. If you where neoprene socks (silk sock liners under them make the neoprene easy to slide on, the sweat from your feet will be kept from getting inside the boots and your feet will stay warm. This has worked beautifully for me.

Whats the name of the tool and brand you use for cutting tree Shawn looks very sharp. Is that something that can be buy in US if you got in Canada. Love the picture shots of the tree. High Definition makes you appreciate so much the the video. First time to see a fish in snow.

We southerners are just not used to so much snow Shawn. we tolerate it somewhat, but being snowbound like you Canadians is a far fetched reality. We tire of snow and ice for only a few days each winter. Your videos make me shudder at times from the cold.
