How To Harvest Peonies for the Longest Vase Life & How to Dry Store Peonies For Later Use

Here's how to harvest peonies for the longest vase life. Peonies should be harvested when the buds have swelled and feel like a stale marshmallow when squeezed between your fingers. You will also notice that the sepals have started to pull slightly back from the petals at this time. If the bud feels hard like a marble when squeezed, it's too early for harvest and may not open in the vase. On the contrary, blooms that are allowed to fully open in the sun will only last 3-5 days and will shed their petals rapidly. A correctly harvested peony in marshmallow stage will fully open in 24-48 hours in a 68- F location. Here's how to dry store peonies for later use. For dry storage, harvest the peonies in marshmallow stage and wrap bunches of ten in paper. Next, place the wrapped bunches in bulb crates alternating the peony head placement as you stack them. Then place the crates in your cooler at 34/35- F. Dry stored peonies can be held for 3-4 weeks. When rehydrating dry stored peonies leave the paper wrapping around the stems until fully rehydrated. Remove only the amount you need from storage and cut one inch off the base of the stem. Then, place the wrapped peonies in a bucket of fresh clean water in a room temperature area. They will be fully rehydrated in a few hours and at that time the paper can be removed

I hope you can help me- I-m a member of the Federated Garden Club in Missouri. We have or meetings at the local library in Mountain View and so we support the library and they help us with different projects. They have a weekly reading program for children every summer. We would like to donate some books on gardening with children for this program. Would you by any chance be able to recommend any books that would be appropriate.
Love your videos your gardens are so lovely. I love that you sell flowers but incorporate them into a beautiful home garden not just rows-. thank you

So glad I came across this video. I would love you advice! My daughter is getting married in my backyard in two and a half weeks. My peonies are starting to bloom now. I have some fully open flowers but tons of buds at marble and marshmallow stage. They are so beautiful-exactly like the bouquet are holding. I would love a way to use them for the wedding. To be able to fill vases and mason jars would be great. I don-t have a cold space other than a very cool basement. What could I do?

My peonies are blooming this year, after several, several years of no blooms. I was diligent about giving the plant mushroom compost and fertilizer in early spring and when the plants were about 8-10-, more fertilizer. Unfortunately, I have only 3-4 blooms. I am fine with keeping the blooms on the plant but wonder if this will negatively affect the plant's performance in the future. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you!

Gorgeous! I inherited a 40 foot row of old school, weak stemmed, but STUNNING pink peonies that are over SEVENTY YEARS OLD! They still are covered with lush fragrant blooms every June. Mine are not quite ready to bloom yet in 5B. IMO, Peonies and Delphiniums are the queens of the flower world. THANK YOU for these helpful tips. I had no idea that you could put them in cold storage like that!

Great video! I planted a few peony roots last spring. They did not produce foliage last year, but this spring they have a stem or 2 of foliage. I'm wondering if they are planted too deep, if so can I just lift them so that maybe next year they do better? Or should I wait until fall to do this?

I have 4 peonies planted together this is the 2nd year 2 plants have buds forming 2 plants do not. I think i plant not more than 2 inches below the eyes, can i remove some soil in hope they will bloom? Should i transplant the 2 that are not blooming being extra careful of planted depth?

Free tulip bulbs for the public to take in NYC, Park Avenue. Tulip Dig is the event. This week only.
I took a walk along Park Avenue yesterday. Only very tiny portion was taken so far.
They planted 60 thousands bulbs this year. The tulips were very beautiful!

Do you have any idea how sensitive to ethylene gas they are? My only cold storage is my kitchen fridge. I'm wondering if once wrapped in paper if they can then be wrapped in plastic trash bags to protect them from the gas, or if that would cause more problems.

Great information. I'll remember the -stale mushroom- tip. I end up planting most of my bulbs and tubers here in SC in the late winter/early spring. If I plant them in the fall, active, curious squirrels disturb them before they can form any kind of roots.

Thank you Danielle! These videos are so informative and helpful. I really hope you continue telling us about other flowers as well.
Where I live we still have tulips in bloom. Peonies are next to come. I already can see tiny buds.

Thanks Danielle. I transferred a few peoni roots to a different open area about 6 months ago. I just took out the huge clumps of roots with a shovel and they were divided roughly (sliced basically) but hopefully they will survive.

Question: I am cold storing some peonies for a wedding. They have been in the fridge for about two weeks. What should they look like? I had to take a peek at them. I need to store them for a couple more weeks.

Awesome video! I'd like to get some more herbaceous peonies in our garden. I only have one of them plus a tree peony. I'm curious how many you have at Northlawn Flower Farm. Do you have a favorite?

May I ask where you purchased your peonies roots? I-ve never seen any that look so healthy! My goodness, they are huge! Thanks for this video! It answered soooo many of my questions! Thanks!

Hi Danielle! Love the video! I have a question! Is it ok to cut most of the blooms of of a large peony bush. Or do you need to leave most of them to keep the plant healthy? Thanks in advance!

Very helpful video, thank you. Have you made a video on how to split peonies, the plant itself? I have two very large yellow, that are encroaching in each other now. Best plant in my yard!

Here in 7b GA, I plant shallow with the eyes showing above ground. I pull all the mulch back in the Fall so they can get as cold as possible over the winter. This works very well for me.

Another great video Danielle! You convinced me to get some festiva Maxima peonies last year after seeing your memorial day arrangements. They were so beautiful. Thank you -

Great video! What can I do about the peony plants I have that aren't blooming? Should I dig them up and make a more shallow spot for the tubers? Or just wait until they bloom one day?

Hi Danielle! You mentioned people calling the extension office about peonies. Are you an extension agent for your county? Thanks for the great video! Your garden is looking great!
