Gerald is a diamond! I really do think that teaching kids how to grow food or even knowing where fruit and veg comes from and how it grows is really vital and lacking in todays society.
Might be a weird experiment but you could always store a rhubarb root crown at the bottom of your fridge for a few months and then plant it out like garlic
Last winter in London (zone 9a, i think we only got 1 or 2 days of -6c and not too many below freezing in Jan and Feb. Our last proper snow was in 2010 and we got about 6inches. I do love our rhubarb. Our final pull is usually at the end of September but it has decided to still grow. I am hoping to split ours this winter as it has too many pups and you need to split it every 3 years. I think we have had it almost 10 years now. I gave one to my father in law and he grows in a pot on his balcony in dappled shade and he is further into London. Not sure what variety we have but bought it local and maybe has a Royal name We got 7. 8kg from it in 2024, in an overcrowded 6 m/ 19ft main bed.

I sense that this was a much needed trip for you Kevin. So good hearing how relaxed and calm you were while touring his garden - a definite break from the intensity of your daily work life. Taking it down a notch and immersing yourself in the calm the garden exudes. Best therapy ever!

This was fabulous! I'm actually doing some of his winter fertilizing. I have some extra soil that is not in use right now. I have ground covering on some of it. The other I have been fertilizing fairly heavy so it's ready for spring. Thanks for showing all of this.

You know he may be into something here He fertilizes in December and since it’s organic and slow release, by the time it’s spring it’s all bioavailable when you start your bed and you don’t need to fertilize again.
I may need to put this to the test.

I love how Gerald uses everyday things - nothing fancy - to grow and protect his veggies. He is a wealth of knowledge and it's so great you got to spend some time with him. I'm going to try his runner bean method for sure.

I hope I can grow beets this fall/winter in south texas. never had a fall garden due to 1st 5 years of house I had to remodel. Excited to see what I can grow. have a huge yard might as well put it to use!

Yeah, this is where I unsub. Great idea, but lack of coordination or goal makes this spam in my box. There are great people in every field, but purpose of content is where you keep an audience.

Eric, awesome video. He is a master gardener! Love this. My uncle swears by horse manure. He grows huge watermelons using 2 sessions of 10-10-10 and rototills horse manure in.

I have had a picture of him saved in my folders for years and years! He's holding his champion onions in it, and as soon as he said he was planting his onions I knew it was him!

Kevin can you post the plans for that AWESOME hinged cover We have raccoons and rats that delight in pilfering, that cover looks perfect if I make it with hardware cloth

Love when you do videos like these! Sharing the gardens and the way of life of the people you're connected to is truly epic, Kevin! Happy you enjoyed yourself too.

My grandads both passed before I was born and I always wished I’d had a Grandad just like Gerald. Those of you who do, you are blessed beyond words. Treasure them.

Omg he has the most relaxing calming voice I’ve ever heard. Lol. I could listen and learn from him all day. Enjoy your time with a legend of a veggie grower.

Kevin, I hope you enjoyed filming this video as much as I enjoyed watching it! good for the soul & soil; which I think is something we all need right now.

I remember commenting on a video literal years ago, maybe the first giant cabbage at the homestead, asking for this collab, and Kevin’s reply was just I wish

He’s so knowledgeable, what a gardening guy that knows his stuff! There’s so much any gardener could learn from him, I’m sure. I liked this video a lot!

Great video! I would love to have a cup of tea with Gerald. I am going to use the tip about putting the hole in the pot one inch up from the bottom!
