Ok, here for Sam and the recipes and the comedy. But, he and his son asked a very pertinant question. How do you give medicine to your beloved dog My answer Teach the dog as a pup to accept the medicine. 13 years ago I adopted a new pup after many years of keeping pet dogs. Giving his predecessors medicine was always a nightmare, and I knew other pet owners who had the same problem (cats, dogs and rabbits) I decided to try to teach my new dog to accept medicine by both being up front that medicine was being offered and also rewarding the pup with treats and OTT affection for taking the medicine. Short version, it worked. He always took the medicine I had to give him and he enjoyed it as well as getting the benefit from it. I lost him a few months ago as he got so ill no medicine could have helped him. Long version, whatever pup comes to share my life in future, I will definitely teach the same lesson to as it benefits the dog and makes my life easier. My honest opinion, this post might help you, and more importantly your dog if you listen and take it the right way. Apart from that, keep watching Sam's vids, enjoy them and listen to his advice, the dude knows what he is talking about! Try his recipes, you will make tasty, tasty food.

These EGGS!
You gotta try these!
As much as you love eggs, you really gotta try these deviled eggs. Even if you don't make a video of it, I'd love to hear your feed back on them.
Peanut Butter & Horseradish Deviled Eggs.
1 Part Cooked Egg Yolks
1/4 Part Peanut Butter
1/4 Part Horseradish Sauce (I know you like straight horseradish - not sure how much of that to use if you sub)
1/2 Part Mayo
Kosher Dill Pickle (small slices about the length of the egg and only about 1/4 - 1/3 inch wide)
Smoked Paprika
Sriracha Hot Sauce (or, in your case, you'll prolly use Cholula but the thicker Sriracha will present better for Max's photos)
Slice hard boiled eggs lengthwise and remove yolks.
Mash yolks with fork until fine.
Mix in Peanut Butter and Horseradish Sauce.
After PB and Horseradish are mixed
Then GENTLY mix in Mayo. Do not over mix or it will separate!
Put mixture in eggs I use a spoon for a rustic look. Yes Max, I push it off the spoon with my fingers.
Sprinkle with Smoked Paprika.
Add small slice of Kosher Dill Pickle on top of each.
Zigzag Sriracha Hot Sauce on top.

I am loving the Louis (Lewis) Story. My Vancouver Island girl, Lucky, (a dead ringer for Louis) will ONLY agree to pills. NEVER liquid - for which I have incurred near-emergency-room-warranted wounds when administering. and I suggest this. Take something you know she. I mean, he. loves. In Lucky's case, that is liverworst; in Sam's family, I assume that might be filet mignon. Then trick him. Give him a little glob of his favourite thing. then a second glob. maybe even a third. And when you have him completely suckered into believing that his luck couldn't get any better, and he is swallowing the globs, whole, with no suspicion, you slip the pill into the 4th (or 100th, as the case may be) glob. By the time he knows he's been hoodwinked, he's been medicated. She. I mean, he. will eventually catch on to this ploy -- so switch out the liverworst (or filet) with globs of Boursin, from time-to-time. Then, be ready to defend yourself to your dogless friends.

My husband brought me here to comment since we have to give our dog a shot and a pill every twelve hours. I haven't read all of the comments to see if anyone is suggesting this, but face Louis when you give him the pill. He needs to see you as your hands are approaching his face. It will also be easier to open his mouth. You can use both hands when you're facing him. Then push the pill as far back as you possibly can in his throat, close his mouth and keep it closed while you rub his throat so that he will swallow the pill. Praise him highly at every step and reward him with a treat upon completion. Don't express disappointment for his defensive behavior. He's scared, not deliberately mean.

The best way to give a dog a pill is to get their favorite lunchmeat; I use highly processed turkey since it doesn't fall apart. Tear the piece of meat in half, wrap the pill in that piece and give it to your puppers. Then as soon as the starts to eat it, wave the other half in their face, but don't give it to them. This gets them to quickly swallow the half with the pill and trains them to expect the other half when they swallow the first half. Then I quickly give them the other half of the meat without the pill, so they are sure to swallow the first one. Works every time! For my dog at least.

MY dog is arguably worse than Lewis! I have supposedly given her pills, only to later find them spit out UNDER the couch! She's tried to bite me, many times. Wasted hundreds on wasted medicine, pill pockets, syringe feeders, etc. When she got sick recently and I had NO CHOICE but to get it in her, or she'd end up hospitalized, I finally broke down and. crushed the pills and mixed into Breyer's natural vanilla ice cream. She got a scoop of it 2x daily for 2 weeks and never seemed to mind the crushed pills! Granted, this is not ideal, but it did finally work!

I have a beautiful girl cat named Fluffy who I have been in love with since she was a baby in 2009. Since 2016, she has been prone to seizures, so I do need to give her pills. Sometimes she fights it, and I take that as she needs a break. I trust her to know her body better than me. Fortunately, though she's turning 16 next year, she hasn't had a seizure in over 5 years now. This may not help you with your problem, but wanted you to know I understand how difficult it can be to give medicine to pets. Keep it up, Sam, I love you and your whole family.

LEWIS tactic was taught to me by vet when I worked in kennel. works well Ive found. Cover nostrils and hold upper jaw open with one hand while tickling under throat area to trigger swallowing mechanism and hold bottom jaw open with other hand. You or a second person place pill as far back into mouth as you can while tickling / stimulating swallowing.
If possible everyone involved try to stay calm and relaxed, yet firm.
Once practiced a few times by humans and dog the whole thing can become a swift easy few seconds said and done for all.

I don't know how often Lewis needs his meds but our dog, Oliver takes a flea/heart worm type of med once a month. The thing that works for Oliver is baked/rotisserie chicken skin. Not much. just enough to cover the pill. I know this is not good for daily meds but if not daily its fine. and I make your rotisserie chicken recipe all the time and have for years so I always freeze some of the skin and only use a tiny portion of it to cover the pill once a month. It works like a charm.

I grind up dog pills and put them in their food. They have no way of knowing and they eat their dinner. I have a coon hound who gets these infections that she bites at and the doctor gives us these pills. I grind them up, I bash them in a paper towel with a jar, and I sprinkle it into the food. Works every time. I also sprinkle in some powdered organ meat into it so it just tastes like meat. Anyway, that is what I do.

Put your thumb at the hinge point of the jaw, do the same with your for finger on other side of the jaw, slowly open jaw keeping pressure with your thumb, and for finger, this way your out of the bitety bits, open the mouth, drop pill in as far as you can, pull head back, then hold mussel closed, the magic part is to then blow at the nostrils, this will get Lewis to swallow.
Pill gone

Hey Sam! I had a toy yorkie that required meds and he hated taking them so the doctor suggested that we have the medicine crushed up and turned into a liquid form with a little flavoring with a little syringe. A local pharmacy took care of that for us for years so that might be an option. Giving dogs meds can be challenging! I hope this helps. Cheers and Mele Kalikimaka!

I would love to see a live French Toast Cook off - There are lots of talk online currently about what is the best bread, what is the best mixture, etc This even includes using ice cream. I have seen no one do a real side by side comparison, think this would not only be entertaining, but help solve things for everyone online once and for all

for the dog: crush the pill, mix it with a tiny bit of water in a shotglass, then suck it all up into a larger oral syringe.
then poke it behind/through his teeth, and squirt. you can also just crush the pill, mix it with a little less water to make a paste, then smear it onto his leg or paw. he'll clean himself and lick it up.

If you do happen to get taro leaves on the mainland, keep in mind they're pretty toxic until thoroughly cooked. Even the juice from raw taro leaves can cause skin irritation. It's oxalic acid crystals that break down once it's cooked. Everyone in Hawaii knows this, mainland people, probably not. Be aware if you're preparing this.

Butter fish is actually black cod. Ono is okay, never had it with Laulau before, but it sounds good. And really, Hawaiian salt is the only seasoning. The Taro Leaves needed prepping also, it needed to soak in water overnight to prevent itchiness caused by soluble oxalate, in the throat, so hopefully you cooked it well enough.

What always worked for me was bologna bc it covered the sent. But you can’t just hand it over you have to make the dog feel excited about getting the treat. So dance around and use puppy voices. Yes you’ll look like an idiot doing but they get excited and eat the shit out of it without a care of the meds.

Lewis, see your vet, ours (Downunder) have a big syringe like thing that pops the whole tablet down the back of the throat. Always give him a jackpot treat afterwards that he ONLY gets with that med and it may get easier as he wants the treat and the only way to get it is to take the meds.
