Durians to the South East Asians is like Wagyu to the Japanese. There are alot of breeds and Musang King is considered as the Creme of the Corp. Although there are even higher grades like the Old Tree Musang King, Black Gold and the Black Thorn. Which is a type of the Musang King breed. Thailand has a breed named Kanyao which they are proud of. And they sell it freeze dried. The Musang King breed is the most novice friendly. Liken to Cheddar vs Blue Cheese. Actually freezing it suppresses the smell and retains the creamy buttery bittersweet taste. Nowadays even Mainland China is aqquiring the taste for it. Mainland China receives them frozen. They will either heat it up in the microwave oven if not they will throw it in the BBQ pit, where the natural sugar gets caramelized.

Not to be mean but this is a food that you really have to be eating from a baby. My friend from Thailand brought me some. i tried just a small piece and it tasted like soggy rotten garlic with a tiny bit of sweetness & it smells SOOOO BAD. about 30 mins after eating it i started burping. and OMG I DIDNT STOP IT SMELLS LIKE DEATH I didnt stop burping for several hours and EVERY SINGLE BURP SMELLED like the first one and i got really hot and sweaty for awhile. Its something i will NEVER eat again in life. how ppl crave this thing i will never understand.

after watching your clip, I really would like to try Musang. I used to hate Durian. But once I tried eating Durain at Morakot Market in Chumphon, That totally changed my mind. I deeply understood why it's so called King of Fruit since then. Morakot Market 's also founder told me that most of Durian sold in Thailand is not the nice one as most of the best one always be exported to china causing the A-grade Durian is so rare in Thailand. The left will be sold in Thailand as Durian Onn which is not quite good.

Sorry to digress, but can any kind soul please enlighten me on why Mao Shan Wang durians are so damn expensive? Is it only because of demand of there are other valid reasons? Most durian shops I patronize here in Singapore sell it at 22-25 dollars per KG. I ended up paying around 35 dollars for just one small sized Mao Shan Wang durian because it weighed above 1KG. It left me wondering if I was cheated. Any expert here?

I bought this once in Texas from an Asian market and it was frozen, I guess that's how they ship it from overseas, and I was NOT impressed with it and threw it away. It may be better at these places where it's fresh and ripe.

Since you like durian very much with variety of ways to eat I suggest you try 'pengat durian' or 'serawa' or 'durian pulut santan'. Its a kind of dessert, combination of durian, coconut milk and sticky rice.
