When my wife and I were in Penang, along with eating all sorts of marvelous street food, we also went to a few indoor restaurants. One evening, we decided to try an old school restaurant by the name of Goh Huat Seng Restaurant, specializing in whats called steamboat, which is basically an old school hot pot. You can probably already tell from watching this video how steamboat got its name - the fire pot looks pretty much like a steamboat with its metal chimney. A hot pot steamboat is basically a round circular pot thats shaped like a donut and elevated. Inside the middle of the pot there are hot charcoal coals that are placed, then the soup is placed around the edges of the pot in the trough, and finally a big chimney is placed on top to release the heat and extra smoke that comes out of the steamboat - its an amazing pot that keeps soup hot and boiling for hours as you enjoy your meal. Goh Huat Seng Restaurant in Penang is a seriously old school restaurant that has been serving Malaysian Chinese style steamboat for many years. Located right on Kimberly street, a famous place for Penang street food, Goh Huat Seng Restaurant still remains a very popular and very local Penang spot. They dont really have a menu, but you basically just sit down and order a few sets of different ingredients. My wife and I got the 2 plate combination plate that came with a host of random goodies like shrimp, pork, meatballs, and a bunch of different vegetables. Our steamboat arrived in all its glory, and I could hardly contain my excitement for such a beautiful cooking device. The soup was nothing too crazy, just plain broth that had a fried garlic flavor. Likewise the ingredients were all plain and just boiled in the soup until cooked. They provided a sauce that included soy sauce, sliced chilies, and fried garlic. Though simple, it was surprising quite good, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ive eaten a lot of hot pots in my days of living in Southeast Asia, but this old school Malaysian Chinese charcoal steamboat was pretty amazing. If youre looking for a unique meal experience in Penang, a restaurant thats not written in all the guidebooks, Goh Huat Seng Restaurant is a pretty cool spot. The food was plain as this type of hot pot normally is, but it was still good, and the experience was fantastic. Goh Huat Seng Restaurant - Penang, Malaysia Address: 59-A, Lebuh Kimberly, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia Prices: We paid 68. 05 MYR for 2 of us, but looking at the menu, it looks like it gets less expensive if you have more people - cheaper the more food you eat

Actually the garlic oil is supposed to go into the soup in your bowl. They should have a proprietary chili sauce for dipping. I blame the restaurant for not running that through you. The quality of the soup base usually is the determining factor of a good Steamboat experience or otherwise. Many modern Steamboat restaurants (also uses induction cookers now) uses loads of MSG for profit purposes. I don't really know a place this time and age that makes soup they're supposed to anymore. except for an invitation to a friend's home served Steamboat party. I'm glad you enjoyed his. I always enjoy a great steamboat meal on rainy days or out in the mountains where the weather is cold.

really enjoyed your video. so glad you appreciated the traditional steamboat especially from that shop as it's one of the famous ones where locals go frequently, I grew up eating there (now has become a tourist attraction with long queues. hope you realised you actually scoop the garlic oil into your bowl (as much as you want from time to time) and the little saucer is for the chilli and soy sauce to dip your food with. the mini electronic fan had replaced the old school method of manual hand fanning the bottom airway of the steamboat hence eaters won't have to take turns in fanning the pot. (that's what happened last time. ohh, these bring back wonderful memories

Sorry to be a party pooper. Fishballs sold at restaurants contain only a small fraction of fish. My grandma used to make 100% pure fishballs - lots of hard labour scraping the meat off the bone and skin and then slapping the meat into a paste with just water and a little salt. After that, more hard labour wiping bits of fish meat off the kitchen tiles. Nowadays it's all machine made and with LOTS of additives other than fish.

You need to make a complaint to YT. The only add I see on your videos in the past month is a Hep C commercial. I normally watch ads to make sure you're making money, but you can only watch a hepatitis medication commercial so many times. And your vids are the only one I'm seeing it on so I suspect you're loosing quite a bit of ad revenue.

Charcoal steamboat is actually more famous at Cameron Highland where you can enjoy hot, soothing soup in a cool, breezy weather The vegetables at Cameron are really fresh and crunchy with a little bit of sweetness, try it when you have the chance going there, you won't regret
