London's Most Famous Sunday Roast (No One Has Ever Done This)

Welcome to The Devonshire, officially the busiest pub in London and home to one of the hardest food reservations in the entire city! Pouring an insane 20, 000 pints of Guinness a week, this Soho icon has completely taken over the London food scene. In this video, I’m spending an entire day at this legendary destination to conquer their two completely different menus back-to-back: the famous Sunday Roast and their live-fire À La Carte menu. We kick things off in the buzzing pub downstairs with co-founder and legendary Chef Ashley Palmer-Watts for a few perfect pints and an exclusive look at their dry-aging meat fridges. Then, it's straight into round one: a massive British Sunday Roast complete with smoked salmon, brawn toast, and sticky toffee pudding. After a quick intermission to walk off the food coma around Piccadilly, we go right back in for round two: the live-fire À La Carte feast. We’re talking wood-fired scallops, giant piles of langoustines, a half lobster, their internet-famous beef cheek and Guinness suet pudding, followed by premium dry-aged Wagyu ribeye and T-bone steaks. If I knew you were here I would have invited you to have a proper Sunday roast and not something that is mass-produced!
Whilst we are unable to have livestock such as chickens at our house, we grow and preserve a lot of our food, such as ferments, dehydration, watering bathing high acid foods, including jams, jelly's, chutney's, pickles, etc and pressure canning, the excess of our crops.
There are a lot of cultural things that have been lost in our country and thus so we get a lot of bad press, due to restaurants going out of business, for cheaper foreign foods, and our gov history of importing foods, instead of focusing on homegrown fruit, veg and livestock.
Whilst I do cook other global cuisines, it is also important to maintain our cultural ones too.

Not complaining there Mark. Guinness is an Irish stout, and it is a great beer YES. BUT. I think the iconic beer that everybody associates with England and London is probably the ales etc. from Fuller's Brewery. Yup, and the last time I had a Fuller's (from the tap) was from The Royal Oak pub here in Ottawa, Canada with a side of Fried Pickles and a main of Fish and Chips close to a decade ago and I remember how Fuller's was shown as being the Pride Of England when it comes to iconic beer. Guinness Stout (From the St. James Gate Brewery) is an iconic Irish beer more than an English/Londoner beer.

Awesomeness. however. you've just made the same mistake every tourist makes when they come to the UK. London isn't really England. it has its own boundaries where within those walls you get London wages. outside you get national standard. If you want a real Sunday dinner real food and people that have time because everyone in London is in a rush to get to the grave. Go North. ! ( Yorkshire ) specifically West Yorkshire. by the time you leave you'll know you have truly visited England.

Great video. I was there in April - managed to get a last minute table through a contact - even got into the Green Room - sat at the same table as you did for your second sitting. The heat off the fire when they opened the door was incredible. The charring of the steak on the embers before putting it in the oven takes the meat to the next level. Scallops were unreal too. I was too full for desert though.

Dear Mark, I agree with you that the owner of the Devonshire restaurant is a nice and humble man. The restaurant is good and interesting, all dishes, I believe you, are tasty, but all meat chops, not only beef, but also lamb and pork are bloody a little. In the USA the beef steak is not as bloody, and lamb and pork aren't bloody at all. Is that national character or taste

A food reviewer that loves everything, with no scale whatsoever, with every item tasted being the best in the world like waking up from a coma with no prior memory, is not a reviewer that should be taken serious in any way! Please, grow an educated opinion, and learn to articulate it in a way that exceeds 5 or so expressions and the vocabulary complexity of a 5-year old.

Sunday Roast: He needs to load a full fork with several elements on board. That's the real taste experience. Load it up, veg first, sides, potato, and finally the meat that traps the preload of veg on the fork. From there, ideally, you need to baptise that forkload in salt and gravy. Then a nodgeen of cold KerryGold butter. There's nothing better.

never ever ever heard anybody say these leeks are phenomenal and never ever ever want to hear it again, also 34: 31 that lettuce, those greens are incredibly fresh. well what the f do you think everybody else eats, rotten veges you are the most fakest food reviewer on social media, your followers goes to show how dumb this world is.

700 people a day for food. I doubt it. That’s 225, 500 meals and 1, 040, 000 pints of Guinness. A year. It would make EXTREME MONEY. I bet they don’t pay staff, the English will get a fraction of minimum wage and they pay no tax. If they paid tax they would be so wealthy on those numbers everyone would be laughing their guts out

Nope.
Gotta travel away from London, to get a proper Sunday roast mate.
I want to say blasphemy but it’s unfair to the pub.
But seriously go find a proper pub off the beaten track, and get a Sunday carvery, or go to somebody’s house for a Sunday dinner.

Group of us spent a lot of money in this place only to have this little short arse rush us through our meal. Food was nice but overpriced and the Guinness is standard. Don’t let the hype train fool you, there are better steak spots in London that appreciate their customers

Love all your shows. Am Italian-American and every Sunday after macaroni came the roast beef, leg of lamb, roast pork and chicken. Sadly all have passed by I continue the tradition with my son who is of Egyptian, Italian, American descent. Bravo, my friend! Cheers!

If you want a real London beer don't go there. There's plenty of pubs in London serving local craft beers on tap (and not Brewdog. If it's to have a Guiness you can have it everywhere in the world, it's gonna be identical. Support local breweries!

You are a lucky man Mark. I watched a lot of your Videos over the years. But this one truely looked amazing. I live in the Philippines now, and they dont have most of these Products, however i know their taste.

You said the beef was tender and well cooked. But you were chewing for awhile! You were even chewing, start talking, chew some more and talk some more. Doesn't seem tender! Looks barely cooked.

It should be Knife on the right hand and fork on the left hand. The way you ate in not how the British eat. A bit of everything goes on the fork at the same time. You are eating the American way.

After 4 pm A la carte menu is my favourite. seafood, lamb chops, bread pudding with custard is epic dinner. This was complimentary for you right Otherwise it costs you arm and a leg.

Guinness pints 20, 000 a week. Rubbish. It’d be one rich pub; Guinness pay a lot of money to the seller. If I could sell 20, 000 pints of Guinness a week I’d open a pub just to do it.
