I started experimenting with my hair back in 2019 and I bought ton of bleach, 40 volume developer, yes 40 volume and no toner (:
I have naturally black hair and guess what, I bleached my hair 4 TIMES IN A ROW.
My hair started to fall off and it went on and on but. I didnt stop there.
Thanks to BradMondo, I stared doing my research, still failing experiments with my hair but now I have completely even copperish hair after using box dye using 20 volume (it's been 8 months since I last colored it.
What I understood was. 1. Developer lifts hair so I haven't used bleach for more than a year.
2. Putting 30 volume (which is in most box dyes I've used) does not give you the color you need if you've bleached your hair because the hair cuticle is already open and the color just flows out.
3. Always try to go a maximum of 2 shades lighter in a go (my personal opinion because I have black hair) and then tone it according to the opposing color of your hair on the color wheel.
4. Use a lot of protein on your hair because bleach basically burns all the protein and pigment in your hair.
5. Lastly, before coloring your hairs, always try to see what color complements the undertone of your skin. For me I have yellow undertone so copper, brown, violet and such suit my skintone best.
I don't think anyone will read this but I Hope Brad does

When I was 14-15 I used to box dye my hair red. At 16 I went abroad and had to try to go back to my natural color. Well. WELL. We (my mother and I) tried on our own and failed hilariously. I mean, red is pretty hard to get rid of. But after that my hair was still intact. So I did go to a salon to dye my hair light brown. It worked for about. 2 weeks and the red came through again. Okay, I thought, all good ghings take three. So I went ot a different Salon. The lady there died my hair almost black and I don't know what knid of solution she went with, but my hair broke after and it was frizzy beyond the moon.
Well. To give credit where credit is due: the colour fadet very nicely to a brunette that actually resembled my acutal hair. But in the end I had to cut a big chunk off. Ever since I've had a few more hair adventures, but never as destructive as that one. (Except for this year where I fried my hair by exessive bleaching. but it grew back. So, yay)

What to do if I have virgin hair I basically just look _barely_ darker than white LMAO (75% German and 25% native if you were wondering. you weren’t but oh wellll) and have 100% virgin hair down to my butt. I was thinking highlights or maybe balayage honey-ish color Even if Brad doesn’t reply I WANT SUGGESTIONS FROM EVERYONE what to do girlies For more info I’m 26 so nothing tooooo crazy bc I’m scared I’ll age myself. Really need a change, please help
Edit: definitely going to a professional when I decide to make the change. I’ve watched Brad for a few years now, just don’t trust myself (I’ll be in NY in April so if you wanna mess around with some virgin _healthy_ hair Brad Mondo I’ll let you do whatever you want as long as it’s not green)

Oooo. I need brown to touch-up the fading Arctic Fox. My roots are 95% grey and silver and the light purple/green fading is not what I like lol. I just hope this brown is better than Overtone -- which left me with a very yellow tint (even though I ordered the darkest brown.
My box-dye life has been great: ) Except Splat. That stained EVERYTHING in my parents' newly remodeled bathroom and then my tub, towels, and pillowcase for weeks after. Then! My hair was super straw-like, rubbery, and horrible: ( 3 years later, the Splatted part of my hair is gone and I have long, lush, awesome curls.
I need a suction-cup phone mount so I can record the next hair dying adventure for you to gawk at!

I started going gray at 25 and started coloring my hair at 29 (30 yrs, so I have a lot of experience. I was very poor when I started and used the cheapest box dye available, but soon discovered Ion products at Sally's. They are made for sensitive skin (which I have, but are also less damaging to the hair. I get a big thing of 20 volume developer and stock up when they have buy one get one free sales. This way it ends up being no more expensive than box dyes. I also use gray magic for stubborn grays, but it pulls red. So you need to use a cool tone if you want to counteract that. This is for the person asking about gray coloring.

Hi Bad. I started box dyeing years ago and am very good at it. I am grey all over, but I was a natural blackhead lady years ago. I alternate between wine red, dark brown, and light brown, which leaves me with more natural colour tones. Years ago, I found a box dye that works with my hair type, and I stick to that brand. I can add it is easier because my hair is short and my hubby makes sure all the hair and the back are covered. Yes, I did learn new facts like not putting dye on freshly washed hair. I will do it from now on. I use the best products to treat my hair, which leaves my hair so soft and beautiful. Love from South Africa.

My eyebrows are white blonde and I hate having to wear makeup all the time, I feel like I look weird with no eyebrows
I use box dye every two weeks it’s only like $5 a box, and going to get them tinted is like$30-$40 at a salon i don’t color the hair on my head though as its so expensive and i hate it when it grows out, plus i actually like my hair color, i sometimes get an itch to change and remind myself im too poor to do it in a salon and too incompetent to do it myself lol. Dying your hair is so fun I used to do it all the time when i was younger but im so lazy and cheap now

Ok, I have about a level 5/7 ash brow hair that I have boxed bleached level 10 since I have been 12/13. Now I am 55, and I asked for 3 professionals to bring my brown down through some of the blonde and the lightest ash blonde up through the regrowth. One said they aren't taught to do retro coloring. Another turned my brown orange ruined it. Maybe I didn't explain it well. I just wanted my 2 colors. I'm turning white. I just wanted to bleach less but still be comfortable with the grow out. Any suggestions Like you I love the blonde and I don't want to get rid of it completely

My hair guy gave me all the info I needed for shopping at Sally's to get the color I'm after (said he knew I wouldn't be able to afford the fees for coming to keep getting my hair done; he was right. I've known him for 35 years. He's awesome but he retired shortly after dishing the info. I'm still not against buying boxed dye, but I've bought a handful and have yet to use one on my head over the past couple years. lol (Also don't reference any pics you see. I'm way overdue for some hair love. He knew me growing up as well. I lived for some boxed dye back then.

The one time i used demi permanent box color it melted my virgin hair. Afterward, for about 10 years, whenever my hair got wet it had a smell of wet dog. When i went to cosmetology school (i colored my hair right before starting school) everyone was flabbergasted as to why my hair would smell like that and why demi permanent color would melt my hair. I literally had my bangs melt off to only be about 2 inches long. This was in 2008 so im sure a lot has changed since. Im no longer doing hair due to back problems so i have not kept up with products

I wish all hairdressers were like Brad. However, they aren't. Every time I've went my hair was ruined. I've had one fry my hair off with bleach. Literally my hair was falling to the floor. She didn't do what I asked either, I needed a color correction after i saw her. Over $400 spent and my hair was left like straw. I couldn't get my money back and she wouldn't fix it.
Anyway, ive been traumatized from hairdressers so I've taught myself all about cutting and coloring my hair. I'm way happier with my results this way.

Hey Brad! We NEED a follow-up vid on which ingredients and brands we should go for/steer away from!
I've been a fan of yours since forever and I'm so glad to see this video. Ever since I follow you i have been staying away from box dye, but also had terrible experiences in the saloon (they fried my hair for two years so much so, that i lost my curl pattern) I have been taking care of it diy for 3 years now, colour, cut, care, everything! Your videos really did help me learn a lot so thank you! Keep rocking

I go to a professional to get my hair done, but that's because I can't look at the back of my hair good and I don't trust myself at all LOL and I love my current stylist because he takes the time and care to look at my hair and make sure everything looks good before I leave his chair. I have been through bad stylists before though, so yes I also understand when people would rather do it themselves. I just decided to keep hopping along until I found someone really good that I trust and go to them everytime now.

I've never had a bad box dye experience but 90% of my salon hair color experiences were terrible, costly to correct at a more expensive salon, etc. I stopped dying hair years ago and just yesterday decided I'm ready for a salon again. Here I am sitting with orange hair (mind you, I didn't ask for a lift but for just gray hair coverage to match my own hair color, looking up tutorials on how to fix this mess. I paid 150$ for it too and I have short hair. No more salons, box dye ftw.

Brad, I have very long, black hair, dyed black hair it’s frizzy wavy curly, and I want to make it red. The beautician have done it before, but one did it to wear. It was so bad that the top part was this strawberry blonde, red, and then the bottom part was red spotted black it wasbad so I wanna ask you I called the beautician and they say it’s gonna be about $200 for me to get this changed over to rat if I did it myself do you think that would be a bad idea

10 years ago I bought a light ash box dye and while I shook up the bottle it looked kind of purple so I applied without a strand test because I knew about the color wheel. As I was applying it, it kept getting darker and darker. At this point I had most of my hair colored. Rinsed it out and it was black. I looked at the box again, then I looked at the tube of dye, and the letter/number combo was different some jerk had switched the tubes and ruined my hair

It might also be a good idea to read the reviews of the exact box dye that you're planning to use beforehand. I once tried to dye my hair pink using box dye (it was a store brand one too) and it only took on my baby hairs. We luckily had some blond box dye from the same brand to be able to dye those strands back (i'm a natural blonde. After reading the reviews of the pink box dye, it seemed like it was dying everyone's hair yellow instead.

I just don’t see the value in box dye. I’d rather order the professional colour and a developer.
I keep it in stock, buy extra if it’s on special or sometimes I’ll grab a colour i might be interested in going to later if it’s on special. Sometimes they are half price just because they are changing their packaging.
This way you can create your own mix if you need and you have control over the vol of toner.

Oh and back in the 80s when perms were in style, a hairdresser burned the crap outta my hair. I looked like I had a strung out brilliant pad on my head! I still have little wire hairs on the top of my forehead that are really hard to control. I've resorted to shaving them cause I haven't found a way to get them looking and feeling like hair! Nope, I'll never again go to a salon. Thanks Brad, for the Butterfly cut!

My greys are resistant to dye but I honestly don’t mind the different tones this gives my hair. It genuinely makes it look more natural and I hated how inky’ my hair would get when dying it in the salon. They also gave me purplish reddish brown hair more than once when I wanted reddish brown- meanwhile I can get the colour I want dying it myself and I shift a tone if I think it starts looking too reddish. Easy
