How Vampire Survivors makes you feel like a god

Power creep is a danger to so many games, especially competitive ones like Hearthstone. But when is power creep. desirable? Games like Risk of Rain, Vampire Survivors, and Hades, use power creep to build you up and make you feel like a god. until they ultimately cast you down into the depths once more. In the case of Vampire Survivors, different combinations and evolutions of weapons can turn the screen into a cacophony of lasers, knives, and garlic. It's so tempting to return for just one more playthrough. Games shown in this video: Hades Noita Risk of Rain Vampire Survivors Binding of Isaac

power creep is when devs introduce new things that raise the overall power level of the game. this is basically what the video said, but part of what was described in the video, with how all player decisions being closed and stagnant, is more accurately just convergence to a specific metagame--the power level of the game isn't necessarily changing, but players gravitate towards the best options that are available, which leads to the stagnation as described. and both of these phenomena can and do occur simultaneously, but they aren't the same thing and they happen separately from each other
and i wouldn't consider a high-power-growth rpg as having power creep unless it was being updated with new, powerful things, and then i would only consider the new things as power creeping over the old things. a single run in a rogue-like is not really relevant to what power creep is
kind of disappointing to see this misunderstanding. the video could've largely had the same message without mentioning power creep, by talking about the problems with power growth in competitive games due to balance, removing the possibility of insane combo/synergy potential to avoid an unbalanced mess, then contrasting that with the beauty of single-player or cooperative games that do allow you to get crazy.

This is a weird little art piece in its own right, huh?
Just gonna add my opinion to many others - for me, the power creep is all about hitting -critical mass- where you jump ahead in the arms race and scramble about getting as much stuff/kills/exp as possible because NOW the challenge is to break the game as far as it can go.
Kinda like capitalism but contained virtually.

reply

Oh yes, Noita can get frighteningly close to game-breaking, but you are NEVER safe.
There is no infinite polymorph immunity in Noita and if you know what I mean then you know that it ALWAYS kills you if it affects you.

reply

That concept is what got me into RPGs as a kid. I remember loving the feeling of being powerful in Final Fantasy 6 on the SNES late game, and how HP gain was exponential per level during early level ups.
reply

Hey polygon! This video and your twitch streams made me buy and put too much time into Vampire Survivors. Loved them, and the game. Thank you!
A+ video and editing, Clayton.

reply

Good timing as I just completed my first 32 heat run on Hades. I told myself I would stop and move onto other games once I achieved that but now I'm wondering how far I can go.
reply

As someone with a hearing impairment, I want to thank you for signposting the audio humor in the subtitles, I probably would've missed it otherwise and it was a good bit.

There's nothing I love more than synergy. Getting that one power up that makes you go -Oooooooh yeah. You're all screwed now! - And you just start mowing through minions.
reply

The parallel of the video's structure with its subject was - The voice work was masterfully done, and ising -In the Hall of the Mountain King- was an especially lovely touch

i get the idea of starting off in a near whisper, but please don't. it means people like me have to rely solely on auto-text, and a lot of the narration loses its ping.
reply

this video sounds like me on a discord call late at night trying to be quiet but then stuff gets wacky and I forget that it's 3am and my neighbors can definitely hear me
reply

Haha, good job on this one. Another power creepy game I rediscovered is Crimsonland. I think it came out in the early 2000s, but it's on mobile now and I looooove it

obsessed with how this starts with clayton whispering like he just thought of a really cool idea at a sleepover and he had to wake us up to tell us

I like to think of Vampire Survivors as the heroic tale of a doomed world rising up from the dead to combat the greatest threat imaginable: a min-maxed player.
reply

I need a link to that incredibly cool, eerie electronica version of -In The Hall of the Mountain King- that plays softly at the end. Shazam failed me: (

Me when I dropped my 4/4 0-cost Triple-pronged-attack Duplicates-in-my-hand-when-played death card in Inscryption: -Awwww, y'all are screwed now! -
reply

Noita earlygame: ho no, these 3 cat sized spiders nearly murdered me
Noita lategame: I can kill god, travel the multiverse and am close to immortal

reply

It-s so obvious he put so much effort into this short video it-s like a breath of fresh air that gets you thinking and thinking! Great job Clayton: )

-In the Hall of the Mountain King- is musical power creep. The tempo, pitch, and instrumentation all ramp up to the very end. Excellent choice.
reply

This video is so tight and well paced and with such an exhilarating ramp up that it felt like it went on for 20 seconds rather than two minutes
reply

I misread that as vampire savior and my heart skipped a beat thinking dark stalkers was gonna get sum recognition
still good vid tho!

reply

I just want to shout out the subtitles for the Hall of the Mountain King at the end of the video. Love those subtitles.
Hi Simone!

reply

The Hall of the Mountain King is such a great choice, because of the power creep that leads to that section in The Witness. Great video!
reply

Clayton, you work at Polygon. Stop making brilliant art films about video games and tell me about the newest anime tiddy simulator.
reply

Something I love in Binding of Isaac is when bosses from the first floor just become regular room enemies at a certain point
reply

I never really understood why I gravitate towards rouge-likes. This video-this video describes it perfectly. Thank you.
reply

Didn't expect the video to go so fast. It really was like power creep; exhilarating, glorious, and addictive.
reply

Into the Hall of the Mountain King is the perfect song choice for this video, as a musician I very much appreciate
reply

Im love the closed captions for this video especially. Tell us more about the cool electronic outros!

The Ironmouse article written by Ana Diaz is under-reaserched and in poor taste. She needs to apologize.
