We asked a legitimate cyber security expert to rate the accuracy of various hacking gameplay. Which games have the most hackurate mechanic? Ummm, look, I dont want to be one of -those- commenters and usually I dont even comment at all but like.
>Cyber security expert
>
>Is just an editor at verge
None of what hes describing was even related to hacking beyond some tangential stuff? I literally would not have an issue if this was pitched as -security journalist- or -guy who likes computers-, but I work in cybersecurity and this was kinda really frustrating to watch. Idk, maybe Im turning into an angry old person slowly but if this is the direction youre going to take things in, please dont pitch the speakers as experts.\r\n

The first one from Ass Creed Black Flag was actually in the realm of CS, but not hacking so much. it looked to me like a creative rendition of building a Fourier transform. Fourier transforms take a bunch of simple curves, sine waves typically, and add them together in order to reproduce a much more complicated high-frequency signal curve. This is used in images (JPEGs, PNGs, etc, video, audio, etc for data compression. No one builds the curves manually, of course, but that seemed to be what they were getting at.

C'mon guys, UPLINK. Game is literally a hacking simulator. Amazing game. It really does give you the feelings he tried to hammer home: the sense of being lost, just trying failed thing after failed thing, seeing different results, iterating, getting more and more stressed out. but then you have a major break through and it's not a scripted gameplay event, it's your understanding of the system you're hacking becoming more complete. Honestly not including this masterpiece in your video is sad.

Here's a real game for viewers of this clown. Install debian, install kali tools, find a target which is located in an enemy country of yours, iran for example. Than start a game.
If you want to do hardware hacking games, you can use GPIOs on a SBC like raspberry pi, or if you can't afford that, a Microprocessor board like Arduino would do.
Just don't listen to what this guy says.

Hacking is either rather easy because some fool is using -admin admin-, or really slow, plodding, boring and frustrating, when none of the damn remote exploits are working on the obviously vulnerable port. It is a thrill when you finally get it, but 9 out of 10 there-s nothing interesting on the machine, you can-t escalate privileges, or you can-t do any lateral movement.

A lot of people complaining about them leaving stuff out, but how do you know they did show him those, but he just didn't have any funny comment on them, and they got cut for time? I rate your comments on how Video Editing works at 2 Swordfishes out of 5.

I'd like to point out that the Mass Effect minigame he played was a circuit bypass game, the hacking minigame involves matching code segments. Not saying it's necessarily more accurate, but it is at least hacking, and not the electrician minigame.

what i kinda missed were the games that feature hacking as the main part of the game. thats what i was kinda expecting. like uplink, hacknet, hacker evolution and so on. was kinda confused when saw zelda and co show up in the video tbh.

I'm a bit disappointed that you only showed the early game of Hack 'n' Slash. 'cause the late game is _wild, _ where you literally break open the actual code of the game objects, and jigger around some values to get it to do what you want.

V. Shocked that there was no Watchdogs, a game I've never played but definitely know is clearly based on hacking. Also could've seen Invisible Inc(if I remember correctly) and hacking in Sly 4, maybe.

The internet is less a -series of tubes- and more of a -highly interconnected system of 1-lane, 2-way highways. - However, I understand the confusion most people have on the subject.

they didn't even show the part in Hack n Slash where you get access to all the scripts the game is running and you have to beat the final boss by reprogramming the encounter smh
reply

I'm surprised neither of the System Shock games were on here, especially since the protagonist of the first one is literally named -the hacker-

why not show him more, you know, hacking games. like EXAPUNKS, or Else Heart. Break, Quadrilateral Cowboy, Hacknet, or even Uplink?

Jack should be rated as number one in hacking, hackerone2019- outlookcom has the best hackers and Jack deals with phone hacks
reply

if you're just talking about integer or boolean parametric toggling, Baba is You is surprisingly accurate to the actual thing.
reply

Why didn't you show him Grey Hack? It's literally one of the most faithful to realistic hacking games on the market
reply

And now do stuff that at least looks kiiiindy like hacking. Like Uplink: Trust is a weakness, or Hacker Evolution.
reply

A -legitimate cyber security expert- who has nothing better to do than make a video for Polygon. 1 Swordfish.

No one is going to talk about how black flag uses the basis of fourier series into their hacking minigame?

To be fair the vending machines in Bioshock run mainly on water (somehow) and only minorly on electricity.
