Why P. T. will always be the best horror game
video description
And I also agree that -game--y parts of the game is expertly hidden, so nothing can make the experience fall off.
But few things.
- -To compare two very different -walking sim- like PT and Gone Home, is very wrong. - Gone Home is far more than a walking sim, its an adventure game done in the style of Bioshock. PT is a randomly generated puzzle box.
- -And PT HAS jumpscares, but its the effective utilization that makes it special. - There are only 2 scares (Lisa locking the door and Lisa killing you, but both are random and not known when playing for the first time, and so the games excellent atmosphere does the job of instilling fear and doubt as to who is in these corridors and why are we here. The elastic band tension is created by this, and the snap release is that effective jumpscare. This kind of thing takes skill and mastery.
- Im surprised you didnt talk about -the community effort of a puzzle-solving and story building. - The 2-3 months following demos release is one of the most exciting days in the horror and games community at large, finding clues and piecing the story. That was the true genius of PTs puzzle box, a community effort to -crack- the game.
And the story itself is one of immense personal guilt, combined with a hint of cosmic horror. All presented in the perfect cryptic manner.
- As much as PT remains a singular most experience, many other horror games have cemented their place as one of the best. -SOMA- (one of the best stories in horror games, -Detention- (a fantastic combination of period drama and horror) and esp. -Darkwood- (Survival combined with East European cosmic horror) are easily among the best since PT.\r\n

I-d love to see you cover the difference between American/European horror games and those made in other cultures. Japanese and Asian horror tends to focus on the build of tension and holding off scares, leaning a lot on imagination and sound hints; while American horror has always been very pointedly aggressive with the horror coming from monsters or a specifically given source. It-d be interesting to see how that translates to video games as well. For example: the first horror game I ever played was -Fatal Frame 2- Crimson Butterfly- that centered around two high school aged twin girls about to graduate getting lost in a forest and coming across a haunted village that only appeared on and off. The gameplay was mostly avoidance based, and the actual -combat- was using an old camera to try and weaken ghosts or solve puzzles before the village could separate and use you and your twin sister to fulfill its stuck in time failed rituals. To this day there is still a tone of bell chimes that sends goosebumps up my arms because in Fatal Frame it was indicative of something being revealed or their being a ghost somewhere hidden in screen(even worse that a lot of Android phones use a very similar tone as a text alert now a days. I think that-d be a rich vein to look into and I-d certainly love to see what you-d scromble up about it

This s--- was some overdramatic game talk. Because PT was great but the way she was painting this was like it was the holy Grail of horror games. I love PT I love PT fan games but I will never sit here and say PT is the greatest horror game of all time. Because because we never got the full version of what PT was to become that is why it's looked at so finally it's a fun game but at the same time it is not the alpha and Omega of horror games. Lady please get off your dramatic pedestal and come back to the freaking reality.
Also what the hell are you talking about there's been several games based around the PT formula that have been released commercially Allison road vestige to name two. Not to mention the wonderful PT inspired projects on itch. io. PT is a fantastic game and a lot of fun to play but I would not say it is a perfect game because perfection in the human world is an illusion and I guarantee you at some point something will come along and be better than TT because that's always the case. For example whoever holds the gold medal in the Olympics for the fastest mile there will always be somebody it will come behind them and run it faster that is just the way things are.

CSB: Back when it first came out, I was part of a fan forum that dedicated itself to poring over every minute detail of PT, and I was the first one to notice something. In the section where the fridge is first seen swinging from the ceiling, you can hear the radio broadcast about the murder/suicide, except there is a muffled echo of the broadcast with a couple second delay playing as well. The clear broadcast ends with -He then hung himself with a garden hose he found in the garage-, but the muffled echo says -He then hung himself with -an umbilical cord- he found in the garage-. It was then that I noticed it wasn't a rope that holds up the suspended refrigerator.
There must have been hundreds, if not thousands of people on that site, and I was the first person to notice that. Made me feel pretty damn special.

i haven't played P. T. but i've seen a few people play it. and watching those kinds of things doesn't usually scare me, or not much, but P. T. did have an effect even though i was watching other people play it, even if it wasn't the first time i was doing that. it's scarier than many horror movies i've seen, tbh. but generally i think (good) horror games are scarier than horror movies, because in a game you have to force yourself to keep going forward into whatever danger there may be despite the fear, and that factor really makes a difference. along with it being more common for games to make you feel like you're actually in there, rather than just someone who's watching

I really wish the creators of that game wherever they are now since Konami fired them. Would take the concept and make the game that PT was to become just without using the silent Hill brand. Because I would like to see where they would take that idea and what they would make with it because I f------ love PT. I've actually become obsessed with that idea of horror game and play everything I can to get my Hands-On that I like it.

Far FAR from it. It was also far from even remotely feeling like a Silent Hill game at all. If they didn-t tack-on the SH theme song, and title at the very end, there-s nothing there the looks, sounds, feels, or plays ANYTHING like a Silent Hill game. Just a barely-interactive walking simulator. I-m actually glad that we didn-t infuse a Hollywood actor-s likeness into a Silent Hill game character. That would-ve been way distracting.

This game is NOT the best horror game ever made. Not even close. Taking Silent Hill and making it a walking simulator is a complete smack into the face to the amazing games before it. IMO I'm glad it was canceled. Don't get me wrong I love horror games even walking sims but I can't respect the direction Hideo Kojima took this particular game. Here's to hoping we get a real Silent Hill in the future.

I can't believe there's no love for Kitty Horrorshow's Anatomy in this comment section. It's a great take on the -walking simulator as horror- concept (at least as far as I've played it, which was a single playthrough. I really want to go back to it and play stubs more, but I fear I might not be able to feel at ease in my own home again. Yep, it scared me THAT much.

I remember watching -Signs- with my girlfriend at the time when that scene with the alien walking came on. I farted so loud from fright and was so embarrassed. My girlfriend broke up with me soon after. Now she is married and has kids, and I live in my parent-s basement. Truly one of the scariest scenes of all time then.
Also, F--- that scene/movie.

awesome, succinct analysis! while i would have loved to see the full game it teased, P. T. was so unique for all its mystery and distinct oddness; i remember watching so many playthroughs back when it came out and reading so much wild speculation about all the different ways to solve it. it's so inimitable

I think The Radio is by far my favorite part of P. T.; They perfectly nailed the uncanny valley there. The Radio Voice sounds like a Radio Announcer, but it-s just a little off, a little too casual, and that makes it so oddly threatening.
-Don-t touch that dial now, we-re just getting started. -

LOL no. Hardly a game. Great experience. But people glorify it b/c Kojima and it's been taken down. If it was still up and it wasn't Kojima, no one would care. I mean it's great, especially for those fortniters with short attention spans, but cmon.

Ok, take a really tense and iconic game and make from it a freaking walking simulator with jumpscares and a cliche monster. Well done Kojima, well done, peoples really eat it up. But Sound in PT is good, i'm agree.

-Tension as thin as a soap bubble, and it doesn't take much to pop- is a good line, and for me why PT failed. The seemingly random things you have to do to advance in PT drained tension away real quick for me.

Its almost like the Shining, but the time it ends, you're left with so many questions. Some people think this is all Big Boss or Snake's nightmare, interesting. Plus its Kojima, he loves hiding secrets.

I don't even consider this a game. It's a visceral heatpounding entity. It's actually alive somehow, not just data but has a soul. It tricks you and can suprise you each time.

Everyone in my house was held hostage on the couch for hours when we first played through PT, we couldn't feel settled and free of it until it was over.

It's really a shame that this game was cancelled. As I remember, they feared the first person perspective, but RE7 did it and it went quite well tbh.
