So I wanted to play Sims 1 again really badly and I looked for a way to do just that.
Sad news: playing Sims 1 is almost impossible nowadays from what I understand.
1) the game is not sold by EA anymore in any shape or form. The original CDs, purchased on eBay or something, are the only way to purchase the game right now. Oh and watch out for the decent amount of scammers pretending to sell the Sims 1 complete collection.
2) even if you had the CD, running it on your PC is really tricky for a few reasons. so in the end, you will probably have to accept some nasty instability issues on the game (or might never be able to get it to run at all.
3) best way to play it, I kid you not, is to have a working PC from the era it came out, with windows 98.
Oh and EA is not in the least bit interested in bringing it back, if you are wondering.
Anyone know of a better way to play it, I'm all ears. But for now, I will just go back sighing as I listen to the soundtrack.

just b4 i saw this video i was wanderin' 'bout mr wright's role the process of makin' soundtrack. i didn't expect he was THAT involved in all the things of production. he's even responsible 4 the mood & ideas behind the music. I LOVE THAT MAN. bravo. he deserves eternal love & compassion.
also i'm very interested in the story of makin' ost 4 makin' magic addition. it's my fav part of the soundtrack, i find it the most catchin' & spiritual.

Funnily enough, the jazz song at 2: 55, -Giant Steps - John Coltrane-, is featured in the Jazz radio station -JNR- in the video game GTA 4, which is anything but calm, I could still tell the song from just a few seconds of listening to it (so much for 'less structure' of the genre lol, Well I supposed it's another kind of relaxing too when you are running people over in the street and simultaneously shooting them through the window XD

Jerry is wonderful. We have just written to him to ask if he had any sheet music for -The Neighborhood- as we have a live pianist at our upcoming wedding and we are hoping to have the song as our recessional piece (exiting out of the ceremony. He went and had a look but unfortunately didn-t have any in his files - however he gave us his congratulations and he said he was honoured to have his music played at our wedding.

You know what other music from that first game that left itself forever embedded in my brain?
The Sims varying whistle tunes, while they're doing a string of activites or just idle.
It's been over 10 years since I last played the first Sims game and I still find myself whistling that stuff off-hand all the time, man.

Another comment, to Polygon: please just do more stuff like this. People won't make fun of you and might actually respect you more for covering this kind of content, instead of trying to spearhead some political activist BS. If you do this, you might not go bankrupt. If you don't, well then you're just digging your own grave.

I use the information in this video when my fancy friends start talking about their distinguished taste in music. Thanks to you I'm part of the conversation now, with sentences like: - I, too, enjoy a good minimalist new age jazz piano song. My favorite is 'buying lumber'. You should check it out. -

Jerry Martin made a remark on Reddit he hoped to release a -Build Mode vol. 2- soundtrack soon but that was 4 years ago so I don't know if he'll ever get around to releasing that.
If he ever does I'm throwing all of it into my custom music folder and listening to it while I build more houses: D

Really cool that you were able to interview him. I've only seen Pseudo's transcriptions of these pieces, I'm curious to see Martin's own transcriptions like you said. I wonder if he'd even send his harmonic frameworks. Thanks for a neat insight into these fun memories!

Kind of odd to use John Coltranes Giant Steps as an example of -unstructured-. Giant Steps is crazy structured. Like the damn thing changes key pretty much every bar and is considered one of the hardest songs ever written to play, let alons improvise to.

This video is nicely made but didn't answer the question it posed. The genre mix is part of the story, but the sheer quality of the music is the most important thing. Those guys should also collaborate on an album, there's still a market for their music.

Do yourself a favor and check out SimCity 3000 soundtrack, it's probably ma favorite ever, alongside Age of Empires 1&2! (SimCity 4 OST is also wonderful)
Edit: both mentioned SimCity soundtracks are also by Jerry Martin.

Nowadays more media are using TS soundtrack for their bgm. And Simmers can immediately pin point which part of the game the song is from. That's how much you played the game that you subconsciously memorized the tune.

Jarry Martin made inexplicably perfect songs. Why can't I ever compose (improvise) such good songs again? and this is aimed at Mark Russo and John R Burr, the main geniuses of this game who were later fired

More and more, I miss the original new age piano jazz, the kitsch-y mid century modern suburbia elevator music, the cheesy strings of happiness and optimism, all of it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The last line is so true. I was tiny when my sister played sims 1 and I watched her religiously. Martin's music shaped my life and surely was one of the reasons why I chose piano as my instrument.

To this day this OST ranks in my top-10 favorite OSTs of all time. It's just so damn good, groovy, and -- especially at the time -- different.

Build music in the sims 1 always made me sad, I would try to stay in build as little as I could. I vibed with the buy mode music though.

2: 11 -I think he went on for 9 or 10 minutes. -
Then why isn't the official track 9 or 10 minutes! It's criminally short as it is.
