We've explained the multiple retcons of the DC universe, but how do Marvel canon and continuity work? Polygon's Susana Polo is here to break it down! Where Marvel gets really screwy? Everything that has ever happened since the events of Fantastic 4 #1 (the beginning of the modern Marvel continuity) has occured in about 15 years, regardless of what year it actually is. Historical stuff remains more or less constant (Captain America, Namor, Wolverine and the original Human Torch all fought in WWII, but everything else gets nudged along as time progresses. Several characters who originally had origins featuring service during the Vietnam War now occurred in either Desert Storm or Afghanistan. Despite the fact that the Fantastic Fours origin was originally published in the 60s, they now got their powers somewhere around 2001 and everything else happened after that.
To my knowledge it has never been addressed in the comics in any meaningful fashion. Im sure theres some Deadpool comics that acknowledge it with a wink and a nod, but theyve never turned around and given any in-canon time meddling explanation for it. Its not down to Kang messing around with the timelines or anything. Its just that whatever year it is, its 15 years or so since it all began.
Weird, right?\r\n

One thing I've thought about a lot as a non comic reading fan is: with retcons not only being a common but accepted and regular part of comics, how does anyone get invested in the continuity and causality of any comics, knowing it'll all get wiped away in an instant if the writer doesnt like it

Darn and I thought understanding transformer comic continuity-s was hard. This has completely done my head in. Funny thing was the transformers actually originally started as part of the Marvel superhero continuity but that didn-t last long as I-m sure you can imagine.

Man, that is so complicated. It's basically a Classic Coke/New Coke/Diet Coke situtation, right? And didn't Marvel start new with Iron Man, Spiderman, Captain America and a few others like 3 or 4 years ago? Or was that only here in Germany?
I'm so confused right now.

my fav alt marvel universe is the x-treme x-men one where hercules and wolverine are lovers & there are multiple evil instances of professor x, one of which is an enormous space whale.

I have zero interest in actually reading comics, but this show has been awesome for me, since you can't listen to any podcast on earth without comics being brought up.

Ultimate Nick Fury was actually introduced in Ultimate X-Men, before The Ultimates even came out. Thoroughly enjoyed your video! -
