The problem with criticizing the they hate each other trope is drama doesnt come out of instant connection. Its far more interesting when they do hate each other. Usually they dont hate each other over something that matters, which is usually the point of bringing them together by the end. But often it requires some overblown disagreement, which indeed relates to an earlier trope.
Also, using Shakespeare and Jane Austen inspired plots dont really qualify as rom coms. Austen is going out of her way to point out the irony in real life, and Shakespearean comedies have pointedly silly plots. One can argue the whole point of R&J turning tragic is to warn against infatuation. There are still plenty of examples for your list. Im unimpressed.
Highly agree about the airport. How much love could it be if you cant even speak up?
Also agree about love scenes. I know full well its awkward/awful for the actors to shoot, but I have seen far more effective implied nudity than wearing the sheet. Its all about camera angles.
Ahaha, if you want proper kissing in the rain, go for dramas in E Asia. I say that with love.
Im in the please no in the grand romantic gesture dept, but I witness them all the time at sporting events. I always hope theyve at least talked marriage first before he asks. I think Ive only seen 1 legit no. I also hate when they have the scoreboard announcer read it. These days, they seem to do more with no sound, and they probably check she says yes before throwing it up on the board. The kiss cam still sucks though. They cant tell.

When my husband and I met, it was like throwing oil in fire. Sparks went everywhere and we fought and we hated each other. We really did. Because we met through a mutual friend, we came across each other frequently. Everytime we were on anothers throat and made everyone else uncomfortable. Than he was submitted to the hospital where I worked and had to stay there for six weeks. I don't know why, but I visited him after work. He was lying still in his bed, he was in pain and I felt sorry for him. So we talked and learned quickly, that we were into the same kind of books and films. And that it was quite easy to talk after we abandonned the fighting. That was 22 years ago. We married, we've got two beautiful daughters, we love each other - and we almost never fight. So, yes, flying sparks and immediate chemistry might result in detest in the beginning and graduately change from there. (Sorry for my bad English, I'm not native.

Actually, falling in love doesnt take that much time if you know what you want! My husband and I fell in love quickly. He did a grand gesture to tell me how he felt, and weve been married almost 13 years. True love is real. Grand gestures are real. Oh, and in college, my boyfriend ran through the airport to catch me before I got on my plane, to tell me that he didnt want us to break up. We had been talking about it because I was moving. He hadnt made up his mind, and we decided we would talk when I got back from my trip. Instead, he wanted me to know before I left. That was long before 9/11, when you could go into the airport to pick people up and be there as long as you wanted. We were together for another year after that. Btw, Romeo and Juliet is not only a terrible representation of true love, or love at first sight, its also Not a Rom-Com

An ex was working out of the country over the summer, but managed to get a week of by working overtime. The plan he and my parents had was to surprise me at their houses at dinner, but he got delayed.
At approximately 1. 30 am I get a text asking if I was awake because he missed me and wanted to talk to me. I called him and we started talking, he asked what I was doing and I told him I was laying on the couch too tired to go to bed, he then asked if I was too tired to go to the door and I asked why?
Dingdong goes the doorbell and I drop the phone, running like a bat out of hell to get to the door as quickly as possible. I unlocked the door and I'm pretty sure I just flung myself into his arms. Luckily he didn't drop me, since, apparently, he hadn't noticed I was no longer on the phone and was still talking on his.

I think there's a very real danger in the proliferation of the idea of love at first sight. Because as is clearly stated in this very video true and real love is developed by getting to know a person and how they are compatible with you. Physical attraction does always need this development so it's actually LUST at first sight. The danger is when you confuse the two and can lead to the misinterpretation that you can convince somebody to 'fall' for you. That because its romantic on your end that it's 'ment to be' and thus all you have to do is make them see it. Or that because you are attracted to each other or are good together physically that even if your not connected to each other on any other deeper level then that's love.

The thing that always drives me nuts is one or more characters being clueless in some capacity despite the fact that they're generally intelligent based on the rest of the plot. Cinderella (and all of its many variations) has this and it's infuriated me since I was a kid. Namely, A Cinderella Story.
You mean to tell me Austin is smart enough to get accepted to Princeton, but he doesn't know who Sam is bc she wears a mask over her eyes? C'mon. I might buy it if he never saw her or interacted with her any other time, but he's clearly shown in several situations in which they speak to each other face to face. He'd figure it out.

While I would agree that there is definitely a line between being a stocker, and chasing someone. Theres also the fact to consider that most if not all girls Like being chased. As do guys. Its flattering, and even if you dont necessarily like the person I think, most people still like it. Until they have someone that they like and feel like the person chasing them is hindering their chances of being noticed by the person they like. (Or unless youre worried because the person you feel like they are in fact, stalking and pushing the boundaries)

Don't forget the tropes where:
There's a love triangle involving a girl and two guys and the men in question are never just regular dudes. One is clearly the girl's dream man while the other guy is an irredeemable asshole who might as well slit puppies' throats every morning to have as fresh of a breakfast as possible.
An established couple breaks up and one or both of them start seeing other people just to create a false sense of moving on when we know they're just going to get back together in Act II.

The most grand romantic gesture that I've had done was about 21 years ago, is going out for a valentine dinner and having about 50 plush toys on the table, a rose, and a bracelet from someone I had been dating for about 9 months. unfortunately, we had broken up about 2 weeks before (this was his way of trying to get me back, and he had begged me to go for dinner, I still loved him more than anyone else (still do, but I was still pd off at him, so it was a very bittersweet moment that didn't change anything

My man and I had been talking about whether or not to make things official (I was more into him than he was me. After I started making an effort to improve my own situation, he came over with my favorite soda, sans label, and some post-its. He has me write whatever label I want and as I slowly understood his metaphor we made our relationship official. 3 years later, he has become such a strong support for me and a great dad to my/our two boys. It was a total RomCom moment, but I will never forget it.

A lot of these I agree with but its not a bad thing to have everything going for you except a man and love life and still feel missing something. I am not one of those who has a dream job or dream life so Im not projecting but can we stop acting like wanting and feeling fulfilled by a man is archaic and anti feminist? Humans are meant for deep connection and it doesnt always mean with close girlfriends. Stop pushing the agenda that its weak to have the feelings of a woman.
reply

YES to the whole idea that men should not pursue women who are not into them! I've had a couple of stalkers in the past, and it's NOT cute, it's NOT charming, and the person being stalked is NOT going to change their mind! Also, can we talk about how creepy it is to befriend someone that you're interested in romantically? That's a little stalkerish too. Be direct, be polite, and if she says no, take the hint and move on. Life is not a movie!
reply

You missed on thing that makes no sense in RomCOms, whenever someone gets the most important letter of their life they ALWAYS read it at night outside in the pouring rain. Somehow, the ink never runs. In real life all the ink would be gone before the character got halfway through the letter. I've lost count how many times I've seen this scene.
reply

Good list, but disagree with using the Say Anything boombox moment as an example of stalking. That was for once NOT a guy pursuing a barely-known girl who had zero interest in him, as in The Notebook etc; it was a guy correctly seeing that the girl who loved him was torn about the decision and might realistically come back. So it works.

I fell in love with my husband on first sight, we had a very intense first meeting, not a single word. But after a while i got to knowe the reel person, he was just as lovely. We have been married fore almost 23 years now. Atracction is a good start, but love is what it make it last. (Get to know the person)

I remember watching I Feel Pretty, She thinks she's ugly, get bumped in the head, wakes up, think she's pretty, spends the whole movie showing it off, bumps her head again, wakes up and thinks she's ugly. It never really explained why it only took a bump on the head to make her feel pretty or ugly.
reply

The Before Sunrise/Sunset/midnight trilogy isnt a love at first sight idea at all, actually. Its very clear that theyre physically attracted and intrigued by each other, not in love. The novelty of What If? takes over when they separate. And between movies 2-3 they have a proper relationship.

NUMBER 6 IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST OFFENDER! Manufactured tension based on simple miscommunication drives me absolutely FCKING nuts! I can handle all the other ones, but this one assumes we the consumer won't watch the product if they don't put it in there. It's such a bad message to send!
reply

Grand Gesture story - it wasn't public, but when I was dating my husband, I went to visit him and he had set up a bunch of candles and string lights in his apartment and was dressed in a suit and when I got there he just wanted to dance with me. It was very romantic and sweet.
reply

You UTTERLY ignore the fact that in every Rom-Com, it's a loving gesture when Women Emotionally and Physically Abuse men.
And we know this normalizes Domestic Violence.
And the way we know this is that No Woman EVER condemns this behavior and it's played for laughs

reply

RomCom =\= Slice of life. You literally just said that the women are typically successful career wise and social life wise. CLearly they have other things going on. But we're watching a movie about how two people fell in love, of course the focus is love
reply

I had a love a first sight. I didn't believe existed and yet. I loved him from the very second I saw him. Not lust not like, pure and complete love.
We broke up after few years but a love like that is worth it even if it doesn't last forever

reply

6: 00 The fact that a newspaper columnist could afford such a swank apartment in NYC, always wore the latest fashions, and had so many high-powered friends, led me to the conclusion that Carrie Bradshaw had a side gig as a coke dealer.
reply

Hmmm. Not sure about No 1. It sort of contradicts the first idea that it takes time to fall in love. There are ways and means of pursuing another that are okay. Sometimes it is the best friend that is the right person.
reply

Idk, I could personally ague with #10. We got engaged 3 months after we met, married a year later, and we've been happily married for 21 years and counting. So that one does happen for real from time to time.
reply

Before Sunrise reference is so out of place (falling in love in no time. They actually developed their feelings throughout the movie. Please watch the movie, it is a great cinematic experience.
reply

I mean they are considered a product of their time. so maybe airport security was pretty lax back then, communication WASNT big cos phones werent as easy and cheap as now: 0 so they make sense at the time
reply

I turned the notebook off during the ferris wheel scene. It was so unsettling. He threatened to kill himself if she didn't go out with him! Straight up emotional blackmail there and pretty scary!

Where's the height difference? The girl and guy are some how in same height bracket but if their it's guy is too short and girl really tall. Show me one where the guy is 6'3 and girl is 5'1
