The differences between English accents are so minor you only have vowels to focus on. In other languages, the consonants are completely different and constitute completely different dialects or languages, because if the consonants are different, then the vowels are probably very different too.

The Australian accent is essentially a southern British accent with a -gloss- I heard the Australian accent described as -Cockney with an Irish gloss- and the New Zealand accent as-Cockney with a Scottish gloss-. New Zealanders will often say -wee- rather than -small- etc.

I swear, I say -trash-, -traffic-, -sad-, and -bad- exactly the same as the speaker. Want a monkey-wrench? I know the difference between -Merry-, -Marry-, and the name -Mary-. Only folks raised in the tri-state actually hear that difference. Prove me wrong.

First time I heard New Zealand accent, it was a video about perfumes. The lady kept talking about sins and I was like WTH? Took me a while to understand she was talking about 'scents'. The pronunciation is totally incomprehensible to me.

Actually the difficulty I've had is distinguishing between an Aussie accent and a Afrikaaner accent. My track record seems to indicate that I am hearing a distinction, but most of the time it feels like a wild guess.

I remember we had an Australian teacher one year and he would always make fun of us for saying West strangely. But we just said you've been living in New Zealand for 5 years and you still can't say Kia Ora right.

Here in the US regional accents are disappearing. Nowadays if you go to New York you rarely hear a New York accent, and if you go to Boston you almost never hear their accent.

The two people being compared having two different vocal tones gets in the way of hearing the accent differences. The better way would be to have the same speaker provide both accents.
