7-year old me in 1989 went to the theaters to see Batman and Honey I Shrunk the Kids. I saw Ghostbusters 2 at a friend's house the day it released on VHS. Somewhere between 1989 and 1992, movies like Cyborg, American Ninja 3, The Mighty Quinn, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Kickboxer, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Road House, Karate Kid 3, Lock up, Turner and Hooch, Little Monsters, Gleaming the Cube, Look Who's Talking were my go to films. Since both my parents worked, I was stuck in the house during the summer days so I had to find ways to pass the time.

Well 1989 in a way was also a year of controversial movies, they never nominated an Oscar for the movie, Do the right thing, a film they wasn't ready for at the time, so the safe choice to win an Oscar that year for the best film was, Driving Miss Daisy, I don't even think that the movie Glory had an Oscar nomination either, but do the right thing one for Best picture, in which my opinion shouldn't have, you only set me back, as a black person 50 years.

1989 had a slew of fantastic films, my favourites including Dead Poet's Society, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Who's Harry Crumb, Uncle Buck, Heathers, Batman, The Burbs, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Teen Witch, My Left Foot, Road House, Back to the Future II, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Kiki's Delivery Service, and When Harry met Sally.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was one of my favorite movies of all time. Not only is it fun and original, but it also got me into Eddie Van Halen, who would become one of my favorite musicians of all time (and now I'm a fan of his son, Wolfgang's, band, Mammoth.

1989 has everything Ghostbusters2, Back to the future 2, Batman, Glory, Do the Right Thing, and Indiana Jones. Thats not to mention the beginning of the Disney Renaissance with Little Mermaid. I was like 5 but these movies still hold up.
reply

The Little Mermaid marked the start of Disney's Renaisance Era and a comeback of Disney after Walt Disney passed away all those years ago. By the way, it was released 8 days after The Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Heathers is one of my all time favorite movies. We saw it on Cinemax or HBO when it released on cable and I fell in love with it as a kid. Now, years later, still one of my all time favorites.

Glory that awesome Civil War epic was supposed to be the Oscar Best Picture for 1989 but nobody wanted to see all of the characters die in the end so they chose Driving Miss Daisy instead.
reply

They were collectively probably the greatest generation of movie executives to ever live. They're gone now which is why we can't make movies like these anymore. And this was just ONE year.

A lot of these movies I remember in passing. I was 9 at the time, and was was outside playing basketball most of the time. Didn't have the patience to watch movies at that age.

I’m realizing what a pivotal role 1989 movies played for me just now. I saw so many of these movies in the theater that year and they are a lot of bangers to this day

Really wanted to see No Holds Barred as an 8 (almost 9) year old. Thankfully dad insisted on Batman. He even asked the attendant which one was better. He said Batman. Haha

That's cool really dealt with a whole lot here and really was a cool decade in films. Won't see it done like this anymore and not in our times now.
