During the Gilded Age, the mass accumulation of money by families like the Vanderbilts changed the economic, social, and physical landscape of the United States. The Vanderbilt family's wealth grew out of the shipping and railroad industries, both of which were largely monopolized by the the family patriarch, Cornelius Commodore Vanderbilt, in the late 19th century. His hard work set the foundation for his sons and grandsons to continue making money, but their descendants became less inclined to earn and more likely to spend.

Wow. I usually love this guy's stories. Unfortunately he was WAY off in most areas on this one. almost like he just used Wikipedia for his research
He glossed right over the Biltmore estate. still the largest residential home in the United States (apx. 175, 000 Sq. ft) that is privately owned by a family. yes. the Vanderbilts. Valued at over 300 million dollars I don't believe that would qualify for 'riches to rags'.

There are no primogeniture laws or traditions in the United States, which is a good thing.
The great fortunes of the previous century Crocker, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Frick, Carnegie, Rockefeller and others are nobodies today; their fortunes and influence are gone, which is a good thing. This pattern will repeat.

It means its true wealth. Anyone who's been rich will fall eventually. Theres always ups n downs. Wealth doesn't belong to anyone.
The actual villain are the ones wealthy for more than 3 centuries. Only black magic n watnots can achieve that. Otherwise its nature to rise n fall.

It is always interesting how so many family businesses go out because of younger generations that never got their hands dirty doing the original work.

The fact that they owned slaves and committed all times inconceivable assaults physically continuously is just unheard of. Very disappointing

Just look at Anderson Cooper. His mother is a Vanderbilt. They tend to be completely corrupt and sell their soul for money and power.
