The Meanings And Symbolism Behind Viking Tattoos

Both history and conventional wisdom hold that Scandinavians and their descendants adorned their bodies with symbols, sigils, and staves - all with specific meanings and importance. Runes were also used to convey information. The characters of the Younger Futhark system were prominent during the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries and are most closely connected with the so-called Viking Age. They have their origins in the aptly named Elder Futhark and gave way to derivatives like Anglo-Saxon runes. But what did these sigils and runes look like? And what did they mean?

alot of this is false, we know very little of the valknut but yes ONE theory is that its connected to odin and death. but it may also be connected to reincarnation or whatever else. we know not for sure. The vegvisir is not viking. Its not even 500 years old, its from the 1800. Not viking age. This video is filled with alot of stereotypical false information about viking symbols and imagery. please stop spreading facts about these symbols. This comment is not ill meant, Im just so tired of finding viking tattoos on people who know nothing of their symbols. A quote from a famous source which name i have forgotten says that Noone should use runes and symbols without knowing their powerful meanings.

Nazis its leaders were big in Norse symbolism and mythology. Mixing with Christian religion. Himler had specially furnaced castle for SS blood rituals contact dead and other hocus pocus nonsense. They believed battle death ending in Valhalla and feasting with Odin. Racism is big part keeping pure blood and hatred. We know theres only one human race and judaism is not a race but a religion that Christianity is based on.

F-ing hell! At least put some effort in it and get your information right. The EARLIEST mention of Vegvisir is late medieval/renaissance Icelandic. It is NOT a Norse pagan symbol. In fact it is a CHRISTIAN magical stave. The exact same goes for the Helm of awe, the Aegishjalmur. Again this is a medieval CHRISTIAN magical stave. The Edda's do mention an Aegishjalmur but this is most likely an actual helmet.

Sowulo: Yeah, not only superman. Put two sowulos together and you have the symbol of mass murder on your body
You could have told more about Nazi symbolism, since many runes are used to show off sympathy for certain ideologies.
I wouldn't ever recommend someone to tattoo runes unless they know what they meant and mean today.
Othala is the classic rune Nazis occupied for sinister uses

this is mostly bs, vegvisir and helm are from the mid 1800s never symbols used by vikings, the only symbol here that can be said with certainty to be a viking symbol is Yggdrasil which we have evidence of in runes here in sweden from the 3rd century, it most of what is said here can go out the back way with all the other garbage.

When you tattoo REID, better just go along with it's for Reebok. Tattooing R, and saying it represents a dude's name, will set you up for some awkward moment.
My mate: hey man, long time no see. Say, what's that tattoo? You into Reebok?
Me: No. It's for REID.
Mate (backing off): ooooookaaaay.

These are Rune characters. I had no idea how to pronounce them lol
If you think about it they match up to the charkas colors and meanings in Hindu or whatever yoga people are loland meanings of the stages of the tree of life in kabbalah

Dagach also stands for twilight, not the movie or books, but the space between day and night. It's supposed to represent the time of dreams. It also stands for imagination and wisdom.

I would love to hear about Viking marriahes, food, art & how some of them ended up settling is different places in the world where they had previously invaded (example - the UK.
reply

Most off them has nothing to do with the Viking age. First they are not Viking tattooed.
Second most of the symbols are mordern symbols like the vegvisir which is from 1860

And there I was thnking of getting The Witcher's magical signs. axi, aard etc. BTW what did the vikings do for kicks apart from plundering and raping and all that good stuff.

I believe they mistranslated the hammer's name there's still alot that archeologists don't understand.
It's far more likely that it meant the lover of vanquishing.

All the people I know who are into Runes and vikings and stuff of that sort, most flinging that odal around, ended up being closet (or not so much) nazis.
reply

Its to bad Vikings did not have tattoos. It is clear, its very clear. And btw Ahmad Fadlan did not say tattoo. Theres no way to take you seriously. Unreal
reply

Any elder Futhark is not viking. Since it pre dates the viking age. And ffs. The vegvisir is medieval. Thus AFTER the viking age. During christian iceland.
reply

The vallnut isn't the symbols actual name. it's what people call it. we just call it the triple unity and it's true meaning isn't for the profane
reply

It looks like tattoo's used to remind us of something important originate from Odin carving and staining the runes that he needed to remember wisdom.

Here's our video on Viking tattoos:
Oh, there's little evidence they had em
So here's a video about the modern day meanings of Runes instead

Make sure you do your research before you get some of these tattoos! Unfortunately, white supremacy groups have co-opted some of these symbols.
