All western schoolchildren have heard of Sacagawea, and even more know the story of Pocahontas either from class or the Disney movie. But who was the great and comparatively unknown Marie Dorion? No less than one of the most resilient, courageous, and frankly badass women in history. Dorion (1786 1850) was the daughter of a French Canadian father and a Native American mother. A seasoned survivalist, she would go on to become the only female member of John Jacob Astors legendary Astoria expedition, whose goal was to establish the first trading post at the mouth of the Columbia

I hate that the world has adopted the term bad ass to describe a person who is courageous, fearless and strong when it was originally a negative connotation. FOR ME it is still a negative connotation and there are better phrases in the American language that can be used to describe someone strong and fearless. And yes, I am unapologetic for being educated and cultured. I embrace who I am and glad to not be a follower like most people in the world. I enjoy scholarly pursuits however having spiritual knowledge and common sense is the most worthy goals of the 3 to obtain. A large vocabulary and use of it is admirable even if most people don't know understand certain words.

So what makes her the most badass in American history. You know noof American history. My home town was named after Nancy Hart. Hartwell GA. A revolutionary hero. She would go in enemy camps at night getting information. She was 6 ft tall red hair and eyes that could cut cold steel. One of her most notorious story was three red coat soldiers busted in her cabin and demanded food. When her husband got there. They over took them. Shot one and hung the other two. I dont think anybody ever whooped her ass ever. So do some research next time you call someone most bad ass in America

Another badass lady during the time was Eliza Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton's wife) she lived to be 97! The poor woman went threw so much pain with her husband not having time for her and the family to him cheating on her many times with multiple women and her finding out threw the news then her son getting killed defending her ahole of a husband. Then after her husband died built up so much of NY and WDC and gave so much to charity. And after all what her husband did she forgave him and loved him till the very end.

Most Souix men in the various tribes Lakota, Dakota and Nakota DID NOT believe in treating their women that way. Not all men were perfect but Pierre sounds like a cocky guy who took after his white father's attitude. Not to say that all Native men were good all of the time just saying the plains belief system is AMAZINGLY healthy and good to women as well. Pierre was NOT going by his native ways. Yet she kept marrying white men so. I guess in that time it provided somewhat more stability.

The delay in the expeditions seems to be a common practice. Even the migration of the Donner party was delayed, not good when you have winter months to think about. Lol cell phone coverage. She had a thing for french men, huh? I guess that Fench Indian war was just all the way forgiven. It shows you Indians tendencies werent to be grudge holders. Or else they would have shunned her as well as the husbands.

Why does he always bring his opinions when telling history? Real historians don't put their subjectivity on the spot when telling real events and details, plus he has no reliable sources unlike Kings and Generals so I can't trust them. He has good intentions, but he needs to stop taking things personally, the past is the past, you can't criticize it because there's no point.

There is a Madame Dorion state park, a small one used mostly as a rest stop and picnic area, near Walla Walla in eastern Washington. I used to drive by it often when I Iived on that side of the state. Thank you for this history of Marie Dorion. Now I finally, after over 60 years, know who she actually was.

You should do a video about the Tonquin, the ship that was supposed to meet up with the Astoria party in Oregon, but met a horrific fate instead. More than anything, the loss of the Tonquin doomed the Astoria party.

This woman was amazing. I have the utmost respect for Native Americans. The hardships she endured would have killed most other women. I don't know how she did it. I'm speechless to say the least.

Dates are a little later than this, but do you know J. B. Omohundro, Jr. (Texas Jack) from Fluvana County, Virginia, to Leadville, Colorado? He is/was a distant cousin of mine on my mothers side.

Most modern humans wouldn't last a week living in those conditions. I know I wouldn't. It's incredible to think about the daily and life-long struggles of our ancestors.

What are we going to do today, mom?
Take a wild guess.
Walking?
Why are you still sitting there? We have to do fifty miles before breakfast.

I'm surprised I haven't heard about this before. I guess you can only fit so much in history books. Are there any books/movies/documentaries about this?

What about covering liver eating Johnson? They made a movie with the character Jeremiah Johnson loosely based on him but his real story is fascinating

Here's the kicker. We all come from women ancestors this tough. The movies make it seem easy but this is what women had to go through history.
