When the Seminole Indians Aligned With Escaped Slaves

The Black Seminoles were a group of people that history, for the most part, forgot about. Their alliance with the native Seminole tribes resulted in a unique relationship that had never been seen before, and that changed the course of history for both the Seminoles and the State of Florida as a whole. The Black Seminoles, sometimes called Maroons, were a group of freed men and runaway slaves living in Florida during the mid-16th century. They settled the first free Black town in American history, attained their freedom by joining the Spanish and converting to Catholicism, and formed a tight cultural bond with the Seminole tribes

Proud Gullah/Geechee From Florida. Many of the escaped slaves came from my peoples into Florida to from south Carolina and Georgia plantations to become afro Seminoles. We allied side by side with the Natives using guerilla warfare tactics based off of both African and native American strategies. From our knowledge of poisons and fear tactics to our unique language that we at the time could only understand, we are the underrated foes against our ancestors and created one other very few successful slave uprisings in the United states history!
Gullah: Wen di bukrah dem try fo mek wi chattel, wi nyew dat no man or ooman kyan be wi massa! Hunnuh be di wan dat e massah ob hunnuh. Tenki Seminole dem fa hunnuh kindness an teech'ns wan mi ancesta dem most needed em dur'n de maffah times!
English: When the white man tried to keep us enslaved, we knew that no man nor woman could be our Masters. Only you can be masters of one's self. Thank you to all Native Seminoles for all the help given when my ancestors most needed it during the slavery era!

Thank you weird history for finally touching on Native Americans. Ive been waiting on such a coverage for a while now (more specifically on Native American great chiefs. This just saddens me to the core! And Im fully aware that there have been many unjust historical and current occurrences worthy of discussion / addressing, but how Native Americans were and are still being treated is ABOMINATION to the highest degree! America was their land, their home and their salvation! They were exterminated from it like vermin! To my knowledge no formal pardon or acknowledgment has ever been extended to them, and what remains of them, were just shoved away in conservation camps! There arent many topics that burn my heart as much as this does! And for me, as a simple individual to offer my deepest sorrow and remorse just wouldnt be enough! What happened to Native Americans and this is just sickening but ofcourse fact

Tribal history holds the the Healy Brothers & Sisters were Black Creek. That is to say their mother was was a enslaved person living near Fort Benjamin Hawkins - an octaroon who was victim of the strict one drop rule - when she married an immigrant who was white.
The organizations they helped build, like the Revenue Cutter Service and Georgetown College in DC, credit them as their first African American School President or Ships Captain. This is controversial as the surviving family does not claim these honors and books have been written how they succeeded by passing as white, which - to bring this weird history full circle - is how the five civilized tribes succeeded in early America.

A Slave is derivative of Slav, talk about your peoples European ancestry in that manner, dont disrespect others with your ignorance. Having color isnt synonymous with slavery. But I guess being a colonizer, yall just say and do whatever without any regard for original people. The Seminoles were compromised of various Aboriginal tribes and a small portion of Africans. Whats Always left out is the fact that Aboriginals exist. Natives were adopted into Black tribes, nobody ever talks about it

The Seminoles are mostly slaves that were accepted. They are a nice group of people. They are Africans with less white than most of the other uncle Tom slaves. They are boss and will inherit the land. The tribes in Oklahoma and north Carolina are pedophiles and rapist. They will not inherit. Nor will the Seminoles on Oklahoma. They too will go away. The few native Irish in alachua will be saved only the pure in blood. There are 20 thousand. They will inherit Ireland.

The choice of words the narrator used are important. Especially when he says slave owners DOWNPLAYED the rebellion of the Seminoles so that other slaves would not rebel. Many of these things are occuring in our nation today. Slavery is a thing of the past, as is written, and noone shall stay in the wilderness and everyone shall prosper.

Interestingly enough, in my recent years, Ive came to know that I am actually part Native American however, my family are indifferent towards such topics and mostly identify as black since grandpas the only one in the family with the heritage, I am unsure of which tribe but most likely Navajo

Do you mean First Nations and Blacks (African-Americans? The people in India are Indians not the native peoples of the New World! Some First Nation tribes dont like being called Indians and Americans. Always get permission from a certain tribe about what they would like to be called.

Good attempt to keep the slave narrative. Look closely and you will find that the slaves were the Indigenous Indians before the Mongoloid Indians. If we ever get to the truth and we will. Youll find that we or the so called African slaves have already been here! Who is Olmec?
reply

it was easy for the two to blend because at there core they werent really different. Africans were already used to living in tribal or agriculturally based communities so that transition was easy. use the term enslaved Africans or enslaved peoples instead of just slaves.

I wonder where the white Seminoles were when they were taking down the description of the natives if they saw here and called the carpet color I wonder where those people were during the story when youre on your show those Mongoloids Caucasians

I would like to see some videos about other Native American tribes. I had never known anything about the Seminole tribe at all. Only thing I ever knew was a song written by a country-western singer probably in the mid-1980s that's all I knew.
reply

The native Americans werent called Seminoles they were different Native American tribes mixed together with the blacks so the Spaniards called them Seminoles which means some of many. The word Seminole means mixed. I cant with the lies.

That is Not John Horace 8: 25. That is My Grandfather, Dandy Bruner. Father of Chief Caesar Bruner of the Seminoles & King Pero Bruner of Canadian Town Creek Nation. This picture hangs in the Seminole Nation Museum in Wewoka Oklahoma.

The 3rd largest owner of slaves was a black man, in the U. S. plantation/slavery times. I'd like to learn more about him, because it surprised me but now my curiosity is peaked. Can you find more information about that or his story?
reply

It's not weird once you realize the Daughters Of The Confederacy had a lot to do with education in the south after the Civil War. Thomas Sowell is a good source for information about the early southern liberals or Democrats.

I was a Black History teacher and I never heard of the details and depth of the Black and Seminole relationship. Thanks for opening my eyes! History books need to be rewritten. This truth needs be related to all of the USA.
reply

There were Aboriginal Blacks, Asians, PI, North Africans, Maroons, & Europeans DNA among the original Seminole people. long before the CONQUEST OF AMERICA, The USA, & Spanish / American Slavery in the Americas.

I'd love you to do a video on the Anglo-Portuguese alliance - the oldest alliance in the world which is still in existence. Hasn't always been 100% successful, but a fascinating alliance nonetheless.
