When I was there I noticed most of the dogs had beautiful clear and light blue or brown/green eyes unlike many dogs I regularly see - our tour guide had mentioned that is due to the tiny genetic group of dogs there and perhaps as an after effect of the radiation. They are extremely kind though and not dangerous in the least

I remember them going around shooting the dogs. PETA or some other group wanted to try and save them, but many of them were radioactive.
I also recall that when the accident happened, one tech was in the core and another two were just inside the lead door. All three disintegrated instantly. What a way to go.

As far as I know the chance of surviving high doses of radiation for dogs and cats is higher then for a human because the smaller an animal is the higher is the lethal dose of radiation. A cockroach will survive very very very much longer than a blue whale.

Now that I know you adopt dogs from there, I'm genuinely tempted to in the future, I k how theres so many dogs in the UK needing homes, but I just wanna round up all the ones living in a radioactive area and bring them home

Sure, why not raise a troubled dog, care for it, train it, get it used to your home and family and vice versa only to have it die the next week because all of that took too long for Doggo to see the results?

I'm confused as to how the dogs could still be contaminated to the level of needing to be quarantined. There are two layers of shroud like concrete covering the reactor, and there are workers there constantly.

They were shot trying to not make them die in a painful way, this technique is called Pet Liquidation they were killed to not spread radiation thru their ancestry, the radiation was really high back in 1986.

This is the saddest thing I have ever ever heard about. Oh how I wish I could do something for them. Heartbreaking and it's hard you can visit there but not pet them I get it but damn.

Please stop letting your little sister narrate these. She already sounds like a total bimbo, and the fact that she communicates entirely in pop-culture references doesn't help.

They disnt intentionally abandon their animals. They were evacuated and told they could come back and only take their important documents. Learn about the distaster first

Chernobyl is fine. Rumours are just American propaganda. Me, my wife and 2 & 1/2 children are all healthy here

I would certainly adopt one were it feasible. I already have 2 rescues no one else wanted. Great story.
