How to bring musical refinement to your playing and composing by balancing textures. When we are performing, balancing textures well can add an extra dimension to our playing or singing. Performers who fail to consider the balancing of textures end up with rather colourless outcomes. Worse still, those who balance textures incorrectly can impair what the composer set out to communicate. When we play or sing we need to plan what is of prime importance within a texture and what is not. For example, a melodic line will need to sing out over an accompaniment; in a Fugue we will want to hear the fugal entries sing out. Sometimes balance will be even more subtle, working on more than two levels. This music performance lesson explores the issues that any performer needs to consider. Absorbing the content of this music performance lesson will transform your playing. Reminds me of Miss Ann Elk's theory of the brontosaurus: -It's thin at one end, much, much thicker in the middle and then thin again at the other end- (Monty Python). Seriously as an over 60 year old, looking at Grade 8 piano, your lessons are invaluable. In some respects the aural aspect is the most difficult. Thank you.

Thank you for the excellent lesson! It was very helpful and informative.
I have trouble playing different dynamics in each hand. Is there a technique or exercise to overcome this?
